Course Description
This is a college transfer course in which the following topics are presented: study of composition in conjunction with appropriate literary selections and frequent
theme assignments to reinforce effective writing. A review of standard usage and
the basic techniques of research are also presented.
Content Outline • Basics of the Short Essay • Rhetorical Purposes, Modes, and Strategies • Review of Grammar, Punctuation, and Spelling • Additional readings to include a novel of the instructor's choice • Fundamentals of academic research using MLA documentation
Learning Outcomes
The learning outcomes of this course relate to the ability of students to:
1. Apply appropriate writing strategy for specific topics related to composition.
2. Employ critical reading skills to respond to a variety of texts (including a literary novel of
instructor’s choice) both orally and in writing.
3. Eliminate glaring errors in diction and spelling; such as, clichés and illiteracies.
4. Eliminate major sentence errors; such as, fragments, comma splices, run-ons, mixed
constructions, etc.
5. Produce a research document employing sound academic research methods and the MLA
research documentation format.
6. Write multi-paragraph essays containing at least five (5) paragraphs, with appropriate
purpose statements, such as thesis statements and topic sentences.
7. Compose documents using standard word processing programs such as Microsoft Word.
Grading Policy and Standards
A = 90 - 100. Exceptional—very strong in ideas, organization, voice, word choice,
mechanics, and presentation. A memorably outstanding paper.
B = 80 - 89. Good, solid work. A strong effort with noticeably effective results. C = 70 - 79. Work is acceptable. Average, but not inspired.
D = 60 - 69. Work is very weak.
F = 0 - 59. Work is unacceptable.
* All rubrics are located in the Course Info section of Blackboard.
* Numeric grades on the cusp will be rounded to the nearest whole number (i.e. 89.5 or above = A,
79.5 = B, etc.).
* A student must receive a "C" or higher in English 101 in order to go on to take ENG 102, SPC 205,
and other required courses.
Course Content:
Assessments & Quizzes (Quizzes, Discussion Boards, SSC Tutor Visits and
Workshops): 20%
Writing Assignments: 25% Research Paper: 30%
Final Exam: 25% *Grades in this course are weighted by percentage, so writing assignments are worth more than quizzes. Failing to turn in a writing assignment will have a negative impact on a student’s grade, and failing to turn in a research paper will likely prevent a passing score.
Online and Hybrid Attendance and Withdrawal Policy
This is a skills course. It is vital that you view or attend every lecture in order to
hone and practice the reading, writing, and revision skills you are building. Frequent, active, and high-quality participation is imperative for your learning and
success. The ATC Department of Communications follows a 90% attendance
policy. Please note that in order to remain enrolled in the course, you must not miss more than 10% of the class meetings. If you miss three (3) in person
class meetings (when applicable), you will be withdrawn from the course.
Also, if you do not log in to Bb for two weeks and/or if you fail to submit
any work for two weeks, you will be withdrawn from the course. Students who are ill should stay home and email the instructor prior to missing a class.
Even though no regular face-to-face classes are required in fully online courses,
instructors track your participation and activities online, and students are expected
to login to the course regularly in order to keep up with the course materials.
Likewise, though hybrid classes meet once per week, the rest of the class is
administered fully online and instructors track your participation and activities
online; students are expected to login to the course regularly. Remember that
logging in to the course does not mean just logging into Blackboard; students must
click on the name of the course on the myBlackboard page to go to the course
homepage. Once there, check the course environment for new items. Pay particular
attention to the Announcements page and the Assignments page. The best practice
is to check your ATC email and log in to Blackboard daily.
Students will be “no-showed” if they fail to log into the course in
Blackboard or fail to submit an assignment by the end of the second week
of the term, Friday, May 19 (even if they login). Thereafter, if a student does
not log in and/or submit work for 14 consecutive days without contact with the
instructor, the student will be withdrawn from the class for lack of attendance. If a
student experiences networking or computer issues, please let the instructor know
as soon as possible. Remember, if you do not log in for two weeks and/or fail
to submit any work for two weeks, you will be withdrawn from the course.
You will receive a grade of “W” if withdrawing before midterm (June 12). You will
receive a grade of either “W” or “WF,” depending on your grades, if withdrawing
after midterm.
*If, at the withdrawal threshold, you have a situation that you think warrants an exception to the attendance policy, it is your responsibility to supply written documentation (i.e. doctor’s note, etc.) to the instructor for consideration. This request must be made as promptly as possible to avoid being dropped from the course.
General Course Policies
1). Course Announcements: For fully online courses with no set class time or day
in the course catalog: Check the Blackboard site often, preferably daily, as you are responsible for any information or assignments posted there. At the start of each
week (typically Monday morning), the instructor will post an announcement in
Blackboard that your lessons for the week are available. There will be lecture videos to watch, things to read and do, quizzes to take, discussion boards, etc. The
instructor may also post announcements during the week to alert you to new items
in Blackboard or any updates. Best practice is to log your English class in Blackboard every day! Hybrid classes are facilitated in the same manner, with the
exception that they meet in person one day per week at a scheduled time.
2). Assignment Schedule: ENG 101 follows a set schedule. It is a not self-paced
course. Course materials become available at specific times as the course progresses. Assignments have due dates, and quizzes have open and closing dates.
To allow for learning progression with instructor feedback, you must complete
assignments in order, by or before due dates. Writing assignment submission modules open when assignment instructions become available and remain open
until the due date, so students are able to submit assignments early if desired.
Tests and Quizzes open when the assessment becomes available and remain open until the due date.
Depending on your schedule, set aside a time each day to work on English so you
don't get behind. If you get behind for any reason, please go to Blackboard to view
information about class activities and assignments. In addition, be sure to notify the instructor of any issues preventing your regular participation in the class. Please
be physically and mentally present in any virtual classes, while viewing lecture
videos, and during your English class study time in general. This means that you are attending to class content and activities rather than your phone or other device.
3). Submission: Pay close attention to the guidelines for each individual
assignment. Most assignments must be submitted via Blackboard. Writing assignments will be checked for plagiarism using TurnitIn.com. An assignment is
considered on time only if it is submitted in accordance with the requirements for
that particular assignment. When submitting a Blackboard assignment, use Google
Chrome as the browser and be sure to hit the confirm button to ensure that your assignment can be graded. A computer is the best device to use for completing and
submitting assignments. (A computer is also the best device to use for engaging
with an online course and completing and submitting assignments.) Please Note: All writing assignments MUST be submitted to Turnitin on Blackboard. If a student
does not receive a submission confirmation, it means no assignment is there. If a
student has trouble submitting, contact the instructor immediately. You can also contact the Student Success Center at (803) 508-7482 or [email protected] for
assistance in submitting work in Blackboard. You may also contact the Technology
Help Desk: (803) 508-7257 or [email protected].
4). Format: Unless otherwise instructed, complete all essay assignments in MLA format using Microsoft Word. Font should be Times New Roman, size 12. Double-
space all text. Submit assignments in .doc or .docx file format, using Microsoft
Word. If you do not have Microsoft Word, please contact the ISM Help Desk to discuss how to save your work in a file format that will open in Word: Room 219,
803-508-7257, [email protected]. Some writing assignments may require other
formatting. ISM can also help with device and other technology issues.
5). Quizzes and Discussion Boards over course readings and other course content
will be given periodically throughout the course to help students practice skills and
assess comprehension. The best way to prepare is to complete all course
assignments (including assigned reading) on time and to pay close attention to course material. Making lecture and textbook notes is highly recommended.
Quizzes and Discussion Boards cannot be made up or submitted late; however, the
lowest three grades in this category will be dropped.
*The instructor programs Bb at the start of a semester to drop the three lowest scores in this category. Every time a student quizzes or receives a score for a forum, the system drops the three lowest scores from the overall course grade. A student can have up to three zeros or three low quiz or discussion board scores and it will not affect their overall grade.
6). Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP): A QEP is part of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges decennial reaccreditation process.
The QEP describes a carefully designed course of action that addresses a well-
defined and focused topic or issue related to enhancing student learning and/or student success. Aiken Technical College’s QEP is READ, WRITE, ACHIEVE!
Its goals are to increase student awareness and utilization of student support services; to improve transition and success rates for students moving from transitional writing to ENG 101 and ENG 160; and to improve student reading and writing outcomes. Year 1 (2020-21) focuses on student awareness and utilization of support services, such as Academic Counseling, Tutoring, and Library Resources. Year 2 (2021-22) incorporates Open Educational Resources (OER) into transitional reading and writing and ENG 101 courses. Year 3 (2022-23) introduces a co-requisite approach to transitional writing (via ENG 012) and a focused transitional reading course (RDG 100). Please connect with the Student Success Center staff in Room 770 or the Learning Resource Center Staff in Room 1001 for details on support services offered. There is also a direct link to the Student Success Center Online at the top of the Blackboard main page.
As part of the QEP, all students enrolled in ENG 101 will be required to make use of Student
Success Center services through a minimum of two formal contacts. Individual instructors
will provide details about fulfilling this requirement in their courses. Students' fulfillment of
these requirements will be graded.
Instructor QEP requirements > Tutor Visits and SSC Workshops. English 101
students are required to make at least one Tutor Visit for assistance on a writing
assignment per semester. They are also required to attend at least one Student
Success Center (SSC) Workshop per semester. After a student visits a tutor to work
on a writing assignment and the Center sends confirmation to the instructor, +10
points will be awarded to the Tutor Visit Assessment assignment. After a student
attends one SSC Workshop and the Center sends confirmation to the instructor,
+10 points will be awarded to the SSC Workshop Assessment assignment.
Assessments are part of Quiz scores which comprise 10% of the total course grade.
Students who do not fulfill the required Tutor Visit and SSC Workshop will receive a
score of zero for these two assessments after the last day of classes (July 24,
2023).
8). Late Work: Please submit all assignments on time. You don’t want to fall behind
in the course! The assignment modules for this course in Blackboard are set
to allow submissions before and up to the due date and time. Students will
not be able to submit to the module after the due date and time of the assignment. If you have an emergency, please contact me before the
assignment is due. Computer or internet problems are not an excuse for
submitting work late. Remember that there are computers available for students to use in the ATC Student Success Center, Room 770, and in our library. Also, the
local library has public computers. If you experience a situation that prevents you
from turning in a paper on time, you have the option of submitting one writing
assignment late this semester provided the following criteria are met: • The late essay is submitted within one week of the original due date.
• The late essay is submitted via Blackboard in the column labeled “Late
Submission.”
Once you have used your one late submission, you may not submit
any further late papers. You can only submit to the Late module
once. Final exams are not eligible for late submission.
* Please note that quizzes, discussion boards and other assignments will be available in Blackboard during specified time frame only. There is no make-up option for quizzes or class
assignments as these take place within a specified time period. Failure to respond or participate during this time will result in a grade of zero. The three lowest quiz scores will be dropped.
* Absolutely no work may be submitted after the end of the term, the last day
of classes (Mon., July 24, 2023).
9). Unacceptable Submissions: Assignment submissions that radically fail to meet
the assignment requirements cannot be graded. Examples of such assignments include the following:
• Submission is not in the requested genre. (For example, the assignment was an essay, but the student submitted an outline).
• Submission is not in MLA 9 format (or the format required for the assignment) and/or submission is not in the correct file format (Word).
• Submission does not respond to the correct instructions. (For example, the essay is written about a reading not listed on the syllabus and not given as options for this particular assignment.)
• Submission features gross errors in citation that make determining which information came from which source nearly impossible (e.g. no parenthetical notes).
• Submission contains a 25% or greater Turnitin Match due to Similarity/Originality Errors, or the AI indicator is in the red.
• Submission is a prior submission from a previous ENG 101 class or from another course.
• Submission uses outside resources when this was specifically prohibited for the particular assignment.
• Submission depends heavily on unacceptable outside resources that are neither scholarly nor credible (i.e. Wikipedia, Spark Notes, 123helpme, a blog, etc.).
• Submission missing both in-text citation and a Works Cited page (when required).
• Submission via email.
If the instructor determines that a submission falls into one of these categories, she will place a grade of “1” for the assignment in Blackboard, include an explanation
for the student of why the essay cannot be graded, and email the student. The
student will have three calendar days from the time the “1” appears (and/or the email received) to correct the problem and resubmit. If the student fails to resubmit
or the resubmission is still unacceptable, the student will receive a grade of “0” for
the assignment. The new submission must be submitted to Blackboard in the section labeled Unacceptable Submission Correction within three days.
Further unacceptable submissions will result in a grade of “0.” Once you
have submitted to the Correction module, you may not submit to the
module again. Further unacceptable submissions will result in a grade of “0.”
10). Plagiarism: Every assignment submitted will be checked for plagiarism. If you
have any questions about how to cite outside sources properly, consult your textbook and/or contact the instructor, a tutor, or the librarian. The best time to
ask whether you have cited sources correctly is well before an assignment is due.
See the School Policy section on the ATC website for information about Aiken Tech’s
policies regarding plagiarism.
11). Student/Instructor Communication: For any in-person classes, virtual classes,
discussion boards, and when communicating in general, please show respect and
consideration for others by conducting yourself professionally.
There are three ways to communicate using secure ATC channels: 1) Discussion
Boards in Blackboard (on specific assignments), 2) Virtual Office Hour in Blackboard
(for “How Do I?” questions), or 3) Email (for personal messages from the student
Aiken Tech email account to the instructor Aiken Tech email).
Please note: The instructor will only email students at their ATC email
address. Do not use web-based email or another person’s email to
communicate with the instructor. It will go to junk and you may not receive a
reply.
To email the instructor a personal message or question, please put "English 101-
section number" (for example, ENG 101-067) in the subject line along with the
topic, include your full name, and send a complete letter, not a text style message.
If the instructor is out of the office, students will receive an automatic message to
alert them to the response time. The instructor strives to respond to all emails
within 24 hours during weekday business hours. Emails received after the instructor
leaves the office during the week will be returned the following day; emails received
from Friday afternoon through Sunday night will be returned Monday (unless the
automatic out-of-office reply indicates otherwise). *Please do not email the instructor
rough drafts for proofreading and line by line corrections. Students are responsible for
correcting their own compositions.
12.) ATC Revised Mask Policy: Starting June 1, Aiken Technical College (ATC) employees,
students, and campus guests will no longer be required to wear masks or physically distance while on campus. The decision to lift these requirements is in alignment with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) most recent guidance, subject to certain exceptions, that “fully vaccinated people no longer need to wear a mask or physically distance in any setting.” The College will not require employees, students, or campus guests to be vaccinated. While masks will no longer be required, the CDC recommends continued use of face coverings or masks for those who are unvaccinated. Each individual may choose whether to wear a mask. The College will continue to practice its health and safety protocols, including frequent cleaning and disinfecting public spaces and frequently shared items, providing hand sanitizer stations throughout campus, and encouraging good health practices such as frequent hand washing and staying home if ill. ATC will also continue to monitor guidance from the CDC and the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control and implement health and safety protocols based on the latest information.
13). Final Exams take place July 25-27. Details about the exam appear at the end
of the class schedule.
Students with Disabilities Policy: The College will provide reasonable accommodations as appropriate for students
with documented disabilities. In order for a student to receive accommodations
based on a disability, the student must submit documentation from a qualified professional. The disability services coordinator will review the documentation,
determine the appropriate accommodation(s), and provide a Faculty Notification
Form to the student. For more information about accommodations or special needs,
students should contact the Student Wellness & Accessibility Manager at [email protected] or call (803) 508-7484.
Student Support Services:
Aiken Technical College is committed to supporting the academic, career, and well- being of our students. The following services are available to all ATC students for
free each semester, tutoring, coaching, career services, a state-of-the-art library,
emergency aid, and confidential counseling. Students dealing with heightened feelings of sadness, thoughts of harm, or suicide are encouraged to text “NAMI” to
741741 or call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at (800) 273-8255.
For further information about any of the available support services, please contact
the Student Success at [email protected].
Campus Computer Use Policy: In Accordance with ATC Policy 4-4-108.2, student computer workstations are reserved for the express purpose of providing access to computer programs or the Internet and are NOT to be used to store personal information.
Academic Dishonesty Policy:
All forms of academic dishonesty including, but not limited to cheating on tests, plagiarism, collusion, and falsification of information will call for discipline.
1. Cheating on tests is defined to include the following:
- Copying from another student's test. - Using materials during a test not authorized by the person giving the test. - Collaborating with any other person during a test without permission. - Knowingly obtaining, using, buying, selling, transporting, or soliciting in whole or in - part the contents of an un-administered test. - Bribing any other person to obtain tests or information about tests. - Substituting for another student, or permitting any other person to substitute for - oneself. - Sharing quiz or test passwords.
2. Plagiarism is defined as the appropriation of any other person's work and the unacknowledged incorporation of that work in one's own work offered for credit.
3. Please note that the use of AI tools, such as ChatGPT, to produce any part of a required writing assignment is strictly prohibited and will be considered an act of academic misconduct.
Academic Integrity Pledge:
In keeping with Aiken Technical College’s Honor and Student Codes, I pledge that I will neither give nor accept any unauthorized help on any of the assignments/tests in this course. I will only use instructor authorized outside sources for completing my work. I further pledge that all such outside sources will be cited in my work. I accept full responsibility for honesty in all my work.
Staying in this class indicates your acceptance all policies.
