First Rough Draft
Research Paper Draft: Pandemics and Income Inequality
In late 2019, China was battling a virus that came to be known as COVID-19. The virus quickly spread across the globe. Countries were paralyzed as everything came to a standstill in a bid to stop the spread of the virus. Lockdowns had been placed as people were mandated to stay indoors and work remotely from home. Learning was done online, and public places were no longer open. This is not the first time the world has witnessed a pandemic. There have been different times in history when the world faced different pandemics and epidemics. Some of the world's deadliest plagues ever experienced apart from COVID-19 include; the plague of Justinian, the black death, new world smallpox, the third plague, 1918 flu, and HIV/AIDS. There have also been other plagues that, although not experienced globally, affected a significant part of the world. Some of them are Ebola and the Bubonic plague. From the experience of COVID-19, it is quite evident that pandemics and epidemics bring about a lot of effects. Some of the effects include death, pandemics claiming a lot of lives, and the economy is affected. In light of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, this essay would like to discuss the effects of pandemics on income inequality. This essay aims to argue through facts that pandemics lead to income inequality in countries by exacerbating preexisting inequalities in the labor market, leading to loss of resources, lowering income quality, and disrupting normal activities, thus making it hard to set policies for a quicker economic recovery.
Pandemics and epidemics exacerbate preexisting inequalities in the labor market, consequently leading to income inequality. Globally, there exist inequalities in the labor market. Some of these inequalities include; unequal employment opportunities, wages and hours worked, dimensions of employment, and employment protection, among other factors. These existing factors make it hard for people to have equal income, thus creating income inequality. The presence of a pandemic, as witnessed with the COVID-19 pandemic, aggravates the situation making income inequality much worse than before. According to Chen et al. (2021), pandemics and epidemics contribute to income inequalities by creating an atmosphere that is not conducive for people with lower incomes to work. During the coronavirus pandemic, people had to work from home. This was an advantage to persons that worked in the office department since working from home would not be as challenging. However, for persons working manual labor jobs such as packaging, this would be quite stressful, and it would make the company lay off most of the people. Furthermore, certain companies had to close, and several people were laid off due to low profits. The income inequality became widened because the pandemic had taken over the general income generating activities. Consequently, the pandemic widened the inequalities in the labor market leading to income inequality. Apart from exacerbating the work environment and widening the gap in income inequality, pandemics also lead to the loss of essential resources for generating income.
