Discussion P1:
What is health disparity?
A health disparity is defined as a specific form of health difference that is directly associated with economic, social, or environmental disadvantage. Groups of people who have consistently faced greater social or economic barriers to good health because of their race or ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic status, gender, age, or mental health; physical, sensory, or cognitive disability; sexual orientation or gender identity; geographic location; or other characteristics historically associated with discrimination or exclusion are negatively impacted by health disparities.
Who are the most affected and why?
People from various racial and ethnic minority groups, those with disabilities, women, those who identify as LGBTQI+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, or other), those with limited English proficiency, and other groups all encounter health inequities.
When compared to their White counterparts, members of several racial and ethnic minority groups nationwide have greater rates of poor health and disease for a variety of medical disorders, such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, asthma, heart disease, cancer, and preterm birth. For instance, Black or African American people in the United States have an average life expectancy that is four years lower than that of White people. Even after taking into consideration additional demographic and socioeconomic factors, such as age or wealth, these differences can still exist. Health disparities exist due to different reasons such as limited access to high-quality education and early childhood programs, lack of adequate housing, poor urban planning and community development, low income, and lack of stable employment, etc.
What are the remedies that can be done to overcome health disparity?
Health is probably improved by expanding access to high-quality education. In addition, early childhood interventions, such as structured early childhood education and parental support programs, have a positive impact on children's and parent's health, hold promise for addressing economic disadvantage and health disparities, and generate a sizable return on investment.
Additionally, it is well-recognized that housing conditions influence health. For instance, initiatives to minimize lead exposure and enhance indoor air quality have, respectively, decreased childhood lead poisoning and asthma morbidity. Housing mobility initiatives, which aim to improve low-income families' access to economic opportunities and safer communities, have shown possible health effects.
Lastly, increased access to and awareness of healthy food options can also be addressed through urban design and community development, as can the promotion of physical exercise by way of citywide bike lanes that are widely accessible. Interventions aimed at reducing the density and distribution of alcohol outlets in low-income areas may also have an influence on crime, community safety, and morbidity associated with substance dependence.
