WHAT HARDENING MEANS

            The concept of hardening is nothing new to the computing world. “Hardening refers to providing various means of protection in a computer system. Protection is provided in various layers and is often referred to as defense in depth.” (techopedia)

            It is interesting to know that even when almost everything who is aware of computers and cyber world; they still don’t give due importance to hardening. The current world of computers and internet required some solid hardening done to its system and software but not enough importance is given to it. The quantity of cyber-attacks is increasing day by day and no matter how much security he set, some breach of one type of other do happen and there is nothing then we can do.

“The goal of systems hardening is to reduce security risk by eliminating potential attack vectors and condensing the system’s attack surface. By removing superfluous programs, accounts functions, applications, ports, permissions, access, etc. attackers and malware have fewer opportunities to gain a foothold within your IT ecosystem.” (beyond trust). The basic goal behind the hardening to provide the system that foolproof security that hackers and other with malicious-intentions intenders cannot do any harm.

I see that in this world, the usage of hardening is system is must and must be applied every corner of the computing field. It will guarantee you the endless protection and you will be able to work without the worry to losing your data or other important information. The stress is not limited to just industries or companies but in at home-level, the protection of files must also be there. Though it may seem that a personal computer does not hold such important files as any company does but those PC files are just as important to its users as any other.

I for one believe in this that my laptop must be harden to the core so that my work which is related to studies and my pictures and other important data must stay safe and secure with me.

“Just as your website, web applications or any online business is secured, it is important to harden the OS. Even though you are spending money on WAF or on security plugins, without OS hardening can be extremely vulnerable to hackers.” (Gupte, 2019). For my friends and colleagues; this topic is something they always worry about. Losing important data either form your phones or laptops; it leaves you devastated. We as a generation are extremely involved in computers and internet. We are always working here and there, snapping pictures and downloading different things from games to documents. We risk virus, hackers, scammers and what not. Although we download and update anti=virus but that is not enough the fight the force which is now being used to get inside information. Even losing information about contact is as risky as you anything since you never know who will use your information and in what way. 

          Therefore, hardening of the system should be done and must be encouraged at all levels. Industries cannot risk their client’s information and other data whereas we, students cannot risk our work and social life. That is why; concept of hardening must be encouraged among all people.
