Statistics in Surveys and Polls Project Information

STAT 2220

Summer 2018

Due to the 2016 presidential election, there has been more focus on the accuracy of predictions made from election polls. Many national polls incorrectly predicted who would be the winner of the 2016 presidential election.

On December 12, 2017, Alabama held a Senate special election to replace Senator Jeff Sessions who became the U.S. Attorney General. This contentious election pitted Doug Jones (Democrat) versus Roy Moore (Republican). In the end, Doug Jones won the election with 50% of the vote while Roy Moore had 48%.

For this project, you will investigate 2 polls (Fox News and Emerson) used to predict the winner of the Alabama Senate special election. The Fox News poll correctly predicted the winner while the Emerson poll did not. Go to the following link for information:

The purpose of this project is to delve into issues (pros and cons) with polls from a statistical perspective. You should relate information discussed in lecture in your presentation. Present your detailed discussions in a PowerPoint presentation.

Refer to the project guidelines and rubric as you complete your presentation.
