Summertime Request 5
Topic: Gatekeepers and Floodgates
In chapter 5, Hilliard advances a rather controversial assertion:
· The gatekeepers are the multinational corporations that control almost 90% of the international broadcasting and cable distribution and news dissemination. They put their corporate profits ahead of service.
Whether or not you agree with the motives ascribed to the conglomerates -- and it is true that five or six (depending on this month's mergers) companies do dominate "mainstream media" -- the advent of the Web, the smartphone, the app and the resultant social media raises a question -- does this dominance really matter to the strategic communicator? State your position, and explain your reasoning.
