Stan the Traveling Man by Audge Podge
Stan left the noisy, crowded metropolis to vacation in the country. He was ready to do some fishing. On the way, however, Stan ended up getting lost. Thus, Stan drove up to the highest mountaintop. The climate was so much colder up there that his teeth chattered. He parked his RV on the side of the gigantic mountain and stood on the vertex to find help below. He did not like asking for directions. (He had his pride after all.) But the RV was low on gasoline. At least his wife was not around. He especially disliked asking for directions when his wife was with him. Unfortunately, all Stan saw was wilderness, no residents. The area was so thinly populated that he did not see a soul. Then, Stan scratched his head and looked at his map. He had forgotten to press the RV’s emergency brake after reaching the top. Thus, gravity took its toll. The automobile started rolling downhill. Picking up speed on the route, it rolled into the valley and made several twists and turns. Finally, the RV slowed down and stopped right in front of the lake that Stan was trying to find. He estimated that he had chased the RV for about 10 miles. Stan was so tired from running. He had also gotten the sniffles from the cold mountain air. The RV got pretty beat up, too. Stan could not have been more ecstatic, though. Another successful trip without having to ask for directions, he thought.

from The Velveteen Rabbit
by Margery Williams
"What is REAL?" asked the Rabbit one day, when they were lying side by side near the nursery fender, before Nana came to tidy the room. "Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle?" "Real isn't how you are made," said the Skin Horse. "It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real." "Does it hurt?" asked the Rabbit. "Sometimes," said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. "When you are Real you don't mind being hurt." "Does it happen all at once, like being wound up," he asked, "or bit by bit?" "It doesn't happen all at once," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand." "I suppose you are real?" said the Rabbit. And then he wished he had not said it, for he thought the Skin Horse might be sensitive. But the Skin Horse only smiled. "The Boy's Uncle made me Real," he said. "That was a great many years ago; but once you are Real you can't become unreal again. It lasts for always." The Rabbit sighed. He thought it would be a long time before this magic called Real happened to him. He longed to become Real, to know what it felt like; and yet the idea of growing shabby and losing his eyes and whiskers was rather sad. He wished that he could become it without these uncomfortable things happening to him.

The Hill
"Hurry, hurry, hurry!" Linda shouted as she jumped up and down. Linda's sister Nina glared at her as she struggled up the hill. Not everyone was as fast as Linda biking up a hill. "Hurry, slowpoke!" Linda yelled, tapping on her bike pedal. Nina huffed and puffed up the hill. Her legs burned with each push of the bicycle pedal, and beads of sweat dripped from her forehead. I don't know if I'm going to make it, Nina thought. "Gosh! Who knew I had such a slow sister? I'm so ashamed to be her sister," Linda said, mockingly. Nina's cheeks flushed red because she could hear Linda's friends laughing. Linda's laugh seemed to roar above theirs. Nina put her head down, fought back her tears, and pedaled harder. There's no way that Linda is going to get the best of me, Nina thought. She pushed forward and passed Linda and her friends, whose mouths were wide open. Nina kept pedaling until she reached the top of the hill. The view from the top was wonderful. She could see the entire city from that top. Best of all, none of them below, not even Linda, had pedaled all the way up the hill before.

Jackfruit
Jackfruit is a fruit that grows in hot and humid climates. It is consumed both unripe and ripe. A ripe jackfruit has a sweet fruity flavor, while the unripe fruit has a chewy texture. Jackfruits first grew in Asia in the western mountains of India. This fruit grows on trees and is oval or oblong in shape. It weighs between 10 lbs and 100 lbs. A jackfruit tree can usually bear up to 250 large fruits in a season. Jackfruit is the largest tree-borne fruit in the world. A jackfruit tree is usually 30 to 70 feet high with evergreen leathery leaves. All parts of this tree have a coating of sticky white substance called latex. The skin of a jackfruit is scaly and thorny. The scaly, cone-like, pointed peaks are black in color. The thick rind is greenish-yellow in color, and its inner side is white in color. Unripe jackfruit also contains sticky white latex and is white in color. On ripening, the fruit loses its latex and turns a bright yellow in color. The interior of this fruit has large bulbs with narrow ribbon-like strings around them. In a ripe fruit, the bulb can only be consumed after removing the center seed from each individual bulb. A single fruit contains 100 to 500 bulbs and seeds. Jackfruit contains fiber, and its seeds are full of nutrients. This fibrous fruit contains many vitamins, minerals, proteins, and carbohydrates. It has no fat. The nutrients in jackfruits help the body fight diseases, keep the heart healthy, and improve digestion. Additionally, unripe jackfruit is a good substitute for chicken, meat, beef, and pork. It is also referred to as "vegetable meat". It is used to make curries, chips and stews. Ripe jackfruit is used to make sweet preparations, such as jams, chutneys, candies, ice-creams, and cakes. Jackfruit seeds can be steamed, boiled, or baked. The wood of a jackfruit tree is also very useful. The jackfruit tree wood ages to an orange or red-brown color. It is known to be highly durable, as it is resistant to termites and decay. A yellow dye is extracted from its wood. Jackfruit is also used as cattle feed. Today, all South Asian and Southeast Asian countries grow this fruit commercially.

Billy could barely speak. His parents took him to the dentist. The dentist checked Billy's teeth. "Looks like you have been eating too many candies," the dentist told Billy.
