Sullivan’s Travels

Having watched the movie Sullivan’s Travels by Preston Sturges, one may admit that it shows the social issues like class inequality and relationships between the social classes. Additionally, in order to address these notions, the director utilized the exaggerated incoherence to emphasize the current issues in the society and enhance the primary ideas of the movie. Therefore, it is vital to mention that the approach of using the exaggerated incoherence managed to effectively convey the social issues.

The plot of the movie reveals the story of the successful and rich director who decided to experience the life of a poor and ill-fated person. This experiment was aimed to inspire Sullivan with the new ideas (Sturges). Nevertheless, his attempts to relate to the adventurous life failed due to his close relation to the Hollywood lifestyle. Nevertheless, the unfortunate circumstances managed to provide Sullivan with the desirable experience. This consideration shows that it is impossible to relate to the problems of others unless these issues occurred naturally. The exaggerated incoherence was expressed through the evident contrast between the Hollywood’s life and the experience of Sullivan in labor camp. Namely, the movie managed to address the issue of the social inequality by showing the exaggerated shifts from the mentality of rich people to the experience of an average person. The most evident example is the scene where Sullivan watched the cartoon with workers. Although he did not understand why the workers were so genuinely excited about the cartoon, being in the same circumstances helped Sullivan to relate to these people. In this regard, the director effectively highlights that people from the different social classes can experience the similar emotions only under the equal circumstances.

In conclusion, one may agree that the use of exaggerated incoherence in the movie managed to provide the understanding concerning the social issues. Namely, the contrast between the values and life of different classes illustrates that rich people can understand the problems of poor people only through the similar experience. Moreover, it is important to mention that the primary goal of the director and the character in the movie can be considered as identical.
