Hi
A very well-written summary overall that captures most of the reading’s main ideas. A very well-written commentary
that clearly explains how key ideas from the article apply to your essay topic.
Thanks
Clune, W. H., & Zehnder, A. J.B. (2020, 05). The evolution of sustainability models, from
descriptive, to strategic, to the three pillars framework for applied solutions.
Sustainability Science, 15(3), 1001-1006. https://doi.org/10.1007/s11625-019-00776-8
Summary The authors describe the sustainability model known as the three pillars framework to
explain complex issues that develop due to sustainability. When these issues are observed, the
framework develops solutions that can be applied by economic stakeholders and public, ensuring
environmental sustainability is maintained. The framework builds political and economic
institutions, which sign in incentive structures, stakeholders, and vital inputs needed for
sustainability projects and planning. Another key concept is how the framework develops its
solutions based on financial, economic incentives, governance, law, innovation, and technology in
which certain cases are presented. These are the three pillars that sustainability frameworks should
include to ensure efficiency, durability, and effectiveness. These factors are used depending on
country's level of globalization and ability to get funds needed to carry out findings.
Clune and Zehnder explains the evolution of sustainability frames, that are compared to the
framework which is the most efficient and effective model in developing suitable solutions which
help in environmental sustainability, compared to other models. While, others have been effective,
three pillars model has made more efficient sustainability developments and solutions, because the
framework provides full transparency, initiating effective and efficient sustainability solutions that
are culturally acceptable, scalable, provides a successful foundation, and easily adaptable.
Commentary The solution in the article is useful in my topic, bushfires in Australia, where extreme
climate changes have affected the environment. Bushfires have led to destruction of forests, loss
of life for both animals and humans due to the uncontrollable heatwaves that occurred in recent
Page 2 of 3
years. Bushfires have spread far and wide in Australia due to extreme temperatures caused by
global warming and human activities, leaving the environment unstable for living organisms. This
also created financial, social, and political problems since it has been difficult maintaining
environmental sustainability that ensure the safety of future generations. Hence, a sustainability
solution is necessary to ensure the current and future generations will have the chance to maintain
the environment.
Therefore, the article provides environmental sustainability solutions for countries like
Australia, which is prominent in bushfires. The three pillars framework has explained solutions,
such as law and governance policies that help creating a healthy environment, new economies, and
technological improvements. For example, Precious Woods focuses on solutions to protect forests
and the vegetation around. This is done by introducing sustainable forestry. It is a global leader
that topical forests are managed to prevent or stop bushfires and deforestation by implementing
adaptation and response strategies, such as emergency management and water efficiency.
Herremans, I. M., & Reid, R. E. (2002). Developing awareness of the sustainability concept.
The Journal of Environmental Education, 34(1), 16-20.
https://doi.org/10.1080/00958960209603477
Summary The authors discuss frameworks to create awareness about environmental sustainability to the
public. Such as, triad frameworks used to teach students in classrooms about methods of
environmental sustainability. This framework helps students understand environmental
sustainability in a more concrete manner, whether the environmental, social, and economic
dimensions work against each other or collaborate to achieve sustainability. Effectively, students
will contribute to sustainability and maintenance of the environment in the future. Creating
sustainability awareness for students, also educate adults, ways of conserving the environment.
Thus, students will change the way they perceive the environment and benefits of taking care of it.
Herremans and Reid discuss the challenges faced by academic communities in past years,
ensuring students are offered lessons to learn about sustainability methods in classrooms. Many
universities did not follow the declarations put forth by governing bodies to ensure environmental
Page 3 of 3
education was incorporated into coursework. However, most universities and colleges currently
incorporated environmental education in their coursework, whereby students are provided with
necessary awareness of environmental sustainability, which provides advantages to students, such
as gaining information needed to sustain the environment. For example, expanding their knowledge
on barriers that surround environmental sustainability, and learning whether there is a connection
between the three dimensions.
Commentary The article discusses creation of awareness to students about environmental sustainability
methods in classrooms. If students are not provided with information, the environment may become
unsuitable for future generations. Therefore, the information provides several benefits of teaching
students about environmental sustainability. For example, students gain information on barriers
that make sustainability hard to achieve due to stakeholder diversity. Students learn the connection
between the three dimensions. This helps students learn about each dimension’s part in
environmental sustainability, to evaluate, synthesize and analyze, in maintaining a sustainable
environment.
This article offers solutions that could be applied in my scenario which is, extreme climatic
events such as bushfires. Extreme climatic events occur due to conflict brought about by the three
dimensions, the environmental, social, and economic. For instance, bushfires occur naturally due
to extreme temperatures. However, these temperatures are caused by economic dimensions such
as factories manufacturing chemicals and emitting harmful gasses into the atmosphere. These
tangles the balance of temperatures. Thus, extreme heat during summer causes bushfires and
destruction of natural habitats for living organisms. Therefore, students learn these issues and
develop solutions on how the environment will attain full sustainability by ensuring that the three
dimensions work together to balance activities and maintenance of environment.
