EXTREME CLIMATE EVENTS

BUSHFIRES IN AUSTRALIA

Hello and welcome to this presentation!

Today, I will be presenting my CUC100 Assessment 3.

So, my chosen topic for final essay is “Extreme Climate Events” focusing on Bushfires in Australia. Bushfires are a serious concern in Australia and have gained global attention because of their impact.

1

THESIS STATEMENT

Bushfires caused by extreme climatic changes are a serious concern to the Australians and the world, as they have disrupted lives and livelihoods. They also poses danger to future generations.

This concern should be addressed through government interventions to ensure long-term sustainability of the communities.

Here is my thesis statement,

Climate change is one of the primary causes of bushfires in Australia. Reduced rainfall, increased temperatures and strong winds have contributed mainly to their occurrence. Their occurrence affects every sector of the Australian economy, thus the need for proper interventions and strategies to deal with their impact.

2

BUSHFIRES IN AUSTRALIA

Background

Regular happenings.

Cause significant loss to humans, animal life and properties.

Preceded by extreme high temperatures, low relative humidity and strong winds.

Changing climatic and weather conditions have created an ecology and environment susceptible to fire.

Global warming caused by humans is expected to increase the occurrence of fires.

Stakeholders – Australian public, the government, environmentalists.

Let’s talk about the background,

After conducting research on this topic, I came across various journals and articles which I will provide reference at the end of the presentation.

To summaries my findings I can say,

Bushfires in Australia are regular happenings, that have influenced mainly the nature of the continent over time. These fires have caused significant loss of human and animal lives, also loss of personal property. Extreme high temperatures, low relative humidity and strong winds precede most of the dangerous fires. Changing climatic and weather conditions have created an ecology and environment vulnerable to fire. Global warming caused by humans is expected to increase the occurrence of such.

3

SUSTAINABILITY

Definition- Capability of the current generations to meet their needs, without harming the capacity of forthcoming generations to meet theirs. (Herremans & Reid, 2002).

Bushfires destroy forests that are human’s sources of livelihood, food, water, and medicine.

Fires destroy social fabrics.

https://www.sustainable-environment.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/kids-800x490.jpg

As human beings, it is our responsibility to be mindful of the future generation using the available natural resources which is why I have chosen this definition of sustainability.

However, as this desire is present, it is difficult to actualize it when natural disasters like bushfires occur. Bushfires cause immense destruction in a society where they destroy the social fabric through loss of lives and destruction of natural resources meant to serve future generations.

& stakeholders

Thesis Statement:

What are the responses?

How can the responses be implemented?

Forests are a source of food and medicine and their destruction means loss of income for those who depend on them.

Destruction of infrastructure means loss of business for some residents.

Smoke from the fires pollutes the environment translating to higher levels of carbon in the atmosphere.

Destruction of plants and animals affects biodiversity.

Increased poverty levels have a tremendous effect on livelihoods (Morris, 2020).

Loss of lives corrupts the exiting social fabric.

Sensitizing the masses on how on to deal with bushfires.

Establishing a recovery plan for families affected by the bushfires.

Increasing the human resource and equipment necessary to fight the fire and sensitizing the masses.

Increase funds to aid the recovery plan.

Definition: Capability of the current generations to meet their needs without harming the capacity of forthcoming generations to meet theirs. (Herremans & Reid, 2002)

Scenario &Scope: Forest destruction caused by bushfires in Australia.

Stakeholders: Australian public, the government and the environmentalists.

As you can see, this is a graphical representation of the essay plan covering the issue of bushfires in Australia. It highlights aspects like sustainability, sustainability concerns including economic, environmental and social and the responses to these concerns.

I will present my findings on these in my final essay.

5

SUSTAINABILITY CONCERNS & RESPONSES

Social Concerns

Destruction of society framework.

Physical and psychological trauma.

Mental health problems Social Response (Yu, Xu, Abramson, Li, & Guo, 2020).

Social Response

Increased government funding.

Establishment of safe spaces for the affected.

Mass sensitization on how to deal with bushfires.

https://images.app.goo.gl/rUxwK6yNtJ1y3Lyh9

Let’s talk about the social concerns and responses,

Society is one of the components affected mainly by bushfires. People loose lives, and some become maimed while others suffer psychological issues. Victims, firefighters, first responders and their families get involved with such occurrence. It is vital that the government increases funding and further equip health centers with more resources to deal with the physical and mental effects of the bushfire. The government should sensitize people on how to deal with bushfires once they occur.

6

SUSTAINABILITY CONCERNS & RESPONSES

Environmental Concerns

Smoke from the fires. (Johnston, F., Hanigan, I., Henderson, S., Morgan, G., & Bowman, D. 2011).

Destruction of plants and animals affects biodiversity.

Increased carbon levels.

Alteration of the soil composition.

Environmental Responses

Reduction of coal combustion.

Planting of crops adapted to the bushfires.

https://images.app.goo.gl/FhVyMKkarz1KSBTHA

Moving on to the environmental concerns and responses,

Bushfires are catastrophic as they destroy both flora and fauna. The soil composition which supports biodiversity is also affected, compromising the kind of crops yields produced. The smoke released goes to the clouds contributing to acid rain, which is destructive. Policies to reduce coal combustion can help reduce the carbon levels in the atmosphere and reduce the adverse climatic changes contributing to bushfires.

7

SUSTAINABILITY CONCERNS & RESPONSES

Economic Concerns

Loss of income for those who depend on forests as source of food and medicine.

Destruction of infrastructure means loss of business for some residents (Morris, A. (2020).

Reduced government income.

Increased government expenditure.

Loss of income from tourism.

Economic Reponses

Increased allocation of disaster management funds.

Good economic recovery plan for the affected.

Financial relief for the affected.

Now regarding economic concerns and responses,

Australia loses lots of revenue when bushfires occur because different sectors of the economy like tourism are primarily affected. The government is also pushed to spend more money dealing with the disaster's adverse effects, like offering financial relief to the affected. A sound economic plan for the affected is a good response strategy.

By concluding, I would like to say that I am passionate about this topic because it is sentimental to me, and I believe I am preparing well for Assessment 4. I hope to explain further about impact of bushfires not only in Australia but also globally.

Will need to conduct additional research and try to find peer reviewed references particularly related to my topic. A lot of articles exist on this topic, and I want to focus on the scholarly articles to bring reliable perspective on the issues that I am discussing. I will add more references to enrich my essay.

I am doing well so far, as I have touched on every aspect of the essay. I look forward to having a rich essay on this topic because, I know the wrath of bushfires on Australia’s population, their livelihoods and their connectedness, and the economy.

I will now conclude this presentation. Thank you for your anticipation.
