Overview

In the first week of class, you reflected on a significant ethical dilemma in your life in which you made a decision that you now recognize as morally wrong. You described the situation, the decision-making process, and the factors influencing your choice. Now, in this second part of the assignment, move beyond a simple narrative description to a more analytical and critical assessment of the situation. This longer essay is worth 10 points, weighted at 10% of your course grade (for a total of 13% of your course grade for Parts 1 & 2).

Learning Outcomes

Your Part 2 essay should demonstrate the following:

1. Understanding Ethical Argumentation:

· Understand how ethical argumentation shapes perspectives, values, concepts, and positions.

2. Realizing Contextual Influences:

· Recognize how various contextual factors influence ethical views and decision-making.

3. Applying Ethical Perspectives:

· Apply different ethical perspectives to an ethical question and explain the resulting implications.

4. Articulating and Supporting Your Ethical Position:

· Articulate and support your ethical position, compare it with other ethical positions studied, and critique it in light of course content.

Assignment Instructions

In this second essay, reflect on the personal ethical dilemma you described in Part 1, focusing on the following:

1. Analytical and Critical Assessment:

· Move beyond the narrative to critically assess the ethical dilemma.

· Discuss the factors that made the decision morally wrong.

2. Incorporate Ethical Theories:

· Bring at least two different ethical approaches or theories covered in this course into your discussion.

· Analyze your actions in light of these different views. Consider various ethical perspectives beyond just consequentialist and deontological theories. Explore other approaches, such as ethical relativism, ethical egoism, ethics of care, or existentialist ethics.

3. Evaluate Your Response:

· Determine with which ethical theories or approaches covered in the course your response most closely aligns and explain how it does so.

· Reflect on whether your response clearly goes against the prescriptions of some of the theories and approaches covered in the course.

· Clearly articulate your current ethical position and assess whether it has changed since you confronted the dilemma.

· Reflect on how (or whether) your learning and thoughts from this class have influenced or changed your current ethical stance.

Writing Guidelines

· Ensure your essay provides a clear and thorough analysis of your past ethical dilemma.

· Use at least two ethical approaches or theories covered in this course to frame your analysis.

· Make sure your essay is well-organized and logically structured.

· Limit your essay to a  maximum of 2500 words and meets a  minimum of 1000 words.
