Hi Brent,

Thanks for submitting again.  You continue to make progress with this draft in terms of additional content.  You still need to follow through on a few key points and in particular, in better organizing your ideas to present them more clearly.

Please review my comments on the rubric dated 02/02/2022 for details.  Take more time to address the instructions provided for strengthening your writing.

Please reach out using the Private Discussion if you have any questions at all.

Keep going--you'll get there!

The Fair Use section has been enhanced well. Please discuss Creative Commons and what it entails to wrap up this section.

Additionally, you have a copyright discussion paragraph floating in a different section (photo editing section, paragraph starts "Copyright law could be one potential cause of legal liability..."). Place this paragraph in the actual section where you discuss copyright instead of in an unrelated section.

12/14/2021: Nice job explaining copyrighted works!  Please also list the four criteria for evaluating fair use, and explain Creative Commons. What is it, and why is it important?

02/02/2022:  It's difficult to tell if you've fully addressed this rubric because you have not organized your material to present all of this discussion in one place.  Please make sure that you expand your discussion to address fair use exceptions in digital modification. In your next draft, note key exceptions, such as parody, and some possible consequences for altering or manipulating images or video without permission.  Refer to Digital Modification; Reading: What's Wrong With This Picture? Continue to work on this section so you're closer to the criterion. Currently, you have a lot of content, but it's not focused. To clarify the section,

· Identify ethical concerns and negative impacts with digital modifications and an example

· Identify standards regarding manipulation including what is considered acceptable uses of manipulation as well as unacceptable uses

12/14/2021:  Your comments are on point so far. Expand those comments to address these questions: What are the ethical concerns regarding photo, video, and audio manipulation? What are some negative impacts of digital manipulation? Are governmental or professional association standards regarding manipulation potential solutions to the problem of digital manipulation? What are parody and fair use exceptions to digital manipulation?

12/14/2021:  Good start to explaining confidential vs. public sources of information. Add some brief discussion of key court rulings and events that have had an impact on disclosure of sources in media and journalism. What is the significance of the Supreme Court’s ruling in the New York Times v. Sullivan case? Has 911 had an impact on the perception of the protections afforded journalism? Criterion Feedback

02/02/2022: You have not followed through on the detailed instructions for this rubric provided in your previous feedback.  Your writing is still problematic for its lack of organization, with a lot of additional material tacked on to the end of your guidelines that relate to topics discussed elsewhere in your paper.

You need to group all of your comments for each separate topic in your guidelines together.  So, for example, all of your comments about copyright should be placed immediately after your introduction about the value and importance of ethical guidelines.  All of your comments about digital modification should follow your discussion of copyright, and so on.

To help you organize your material, use headings, as suggested previously.  You would have separate headings for copyright, for digital modification, for defamation, for confidentiality, for privacy, etc.

If you don't understand how to do this, use the tutoring and writing support resources available to you.

You have free access to the following resources through the Academic Support module in Brightspace:

Organization lacks in this submission. Because of lacking organization, it's difficult to tell if you are addressing all of the components. You must work on keeping like-ideas together. Think of each criteria as a section header, Brent. This will help with organization. Adding clear header will 1) Separate your content to assist you in clearly addressing each section, and 2) Will help you determine where content goes so it flows in a clear, logical manner instead of jumping around . It's a guidelines document, and if content isn't in a clear, logical order, you're going to lose the TalkBox community. Follow the order of the directions; place the relevant content for each section where they belong (where they appear in the directions list), and ensure the flow of the content makes sense. Work with a tutor available through your student resources to assist you with this step.

· An explanation of copyright law and Creative Commons licensing

· What U.S. copyright law covers

· What categories of work are excluded

· What fair use is

· The potential impact of digital modification practices on company practices

· Manipulating news photos

· Explanations of relevant aspects of defamation law

· Slander

· Libel

· A discussion about confidential versus public sources of information. Additionally, discussion of the role of transparency as it relates to this issue.

· A description of privacy laws and what employees should do to avoid violating them

· Internal and external communications

· Protecting employee and customer private information

· An explanation of the potential impact of not following the guidelines

12/14/2021:  You express your ideas well overall, but the sections of your guidelines tend to run together, making it more difficult to follow.  Consider adding headings to separate and identify the different topics/sections of your guidelines. This helps greatly with organizing and clearly presenting your content.  You'll find helpful examples/models for formatting your guidelines by looking up (Googling) any of these organizations' websites:

Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) The Washington Post The New York Times International Association for Business Communicators (IABC) American Federation of Advertising (AFA) American Marketing Association (AMA)

Lists sources where needed using citation methods with no major errors

Criterion Feedback

02/02/2022: You're citing sources correctly, but make sure that when you are quoting a source word for word, you are placing that material in quotation marks.  Also, work on limiting how much material of your work is quoted or copied from sources.  Most of your paper should be written in your own words.

December 28, 2021

Citations and references are checking out better here. Continue to ensure each reference has a corresponding in-text citation and vice versa.

12/14/2021:  You've made a good start citing sources, particularly with your references list. Your use of in-text citations is inconsistent.  Make sure that you are providing in-text citations that exactly match your references.  You have a number of references with no corresponding in-text citations.  Again, for every reference there should be a matching in-text citation and vice versa.  Use the CfA Citation Guide link in the Supporting Materials section on the Project Instructions page for help with citing sources. That link will also give you access to the Citation Generator, which can help you create your in-text citations and references.
