Class,

Learning how to determine common knowledge can be challenging, but it comes with time and practice. Here is a link to some information from Yale's Center of Teaching and Learning about the topic. Please take a look and let me know if you have any questions. What did you find interesting or helpful?--Dr. B

Class,

Some parents reluctantly agree to have their children take ADHD medications, but then after seeing the results, they are so glad they did agree due to improvements. Others might have to wait for positive results while types and dosages of medications are adjusted. It is not necessarily that some parents want to immediately begin with medications; it might just be that the lack of results from behavioral modification wears down their resolve and it is like almost any person in pain; the medication becomes quite enticing when another treatment has little to no results. What do you think?

Word Crimes

Class,

Some of you may have already heard this song. For those of you who have not, please click on the link below and enjoy! In the song, Weird Al mentions a number of grammar and language-related "pet peeves." Are there any language related pet peeves that you have, that he didn't mention? Please reply in this thread in at least 50 words for participation credit!

Here’s his delightful grammar song:

Many techniques from Chapter 4 would be beneficial; I chose three to be my primary focus in revising my introduction. The first was focusing on my thesis statement; make sure it was the last line in my introduction, and it was one sentence long. The second I focused on was my introduction. Does it grab the audience's attention and make them want to read more? The last key I worked on was avoiding statements such as "this essay or this paper." Using these suggestions in my introduction has helped me excel in the right direction.

Revised Introduction:

There is a staggering number of individuals that have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), most commonly diagnosed in childhood and continuing through adulthood. The numbers continue to increase daily; increasing diagnosis comes with the need for advanced research and treatments. "Evidence-based treatments for ADHD include medication, psychotherapeutic and psychosocial methods or a combination of these." (Ptacek, 2009, p. 140) The most common treatment plan is the single use of medication. (Ptacek, 2009) Medication can be God-sent; however, it can have hidden dangers; many patients can experience side effects, become reliant on the medication, and possibly overdose.
