Healthy Living Federal Programs Taking the appropriate steps to healthy behavior can increase your lifespan, increase productivity, and reduce healthcare costs. There are numerous federal programs in place that focus on healthy living initiatives.

NSART

The National Sleep Awareness Roundtable (NSART) coalition focuses on the consequences of sleep deprivation. It is made up of governmental, professional, and other interested parties whose mission is to raise awareness of the public health and safety impact of sleep deprivation and sleep disorders.

WISEWOMAN

The WISEWOMAN program is based at the CDC national headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. To help prevent cardiovascular disease, the program offers women chronic disease factor screening, lifestyle intervention, and referral services. There are several programs located throughout the United States, and it is available to low-income, underinsured or uninsured women between the ages of 40–64 years who meet certain requirements. According CDC records, WISEWOMAN provided approximately 78,000 screenings to women for heart disease and stroke risk factors during July 2008 through June 2010 (CDC, 2012b).

Alcohol Program

Another example of a program to address healthy living is the CDC’s Alcohol Program. According to the CDC (2012a), the goals of the Alcohol Program are as follows:

• Improve public health surveillance on excessive alcohol use. . .

• Increase applied public health research on alcohol-related health impacts . . .

• Build state public health capacity in alcohol epidemiology.

• Provide national public health leadership for preventing excessive drinking.
