Sexual Harassment
Let’s learn how an HR manager should deal with a complaint of sexual harassment. You are the HR manager of a healthcare organization. One of the female employees from the radiology department approaches you with concerns about one of the contracted radiologists’ behavior toward her. She complains that the radiologist is rude and intimidating, makes inappropriate gestures, and comments about her clothes. She also complains that he sometimes inappropriately touches her—he constantly rubs her back when speaking to her. This makes her very uncomfortable. She has spoken about this to the radiologist, however, there has been no change in his behavior. This complaint will fall under the category of sexual harassment. What is your responsibility as an HR manager in dealing with sexual harassment? If an employee complains about being sexually harassed by another employee, your task as the HR manager is to investigate the charge, no matter how frivolous it may seem. While investigating, you should gather facts and keep the complaint and process confidential. Once you collect all the data, you should take the next appropriate step and, at the same time, assure the employee who has complained that steps are being taken.
