When meeting with my student to discuss the transcript Evaluation and post High school goals. The very first thing I would like to discuss is what are they planning on doing after high school. The reason I would ask that first, would be considering how close their GPA is meeting CSU eligibility requirements. Their response will give me a better understanding of what plan to put into place in order to get them back on track. By gaining knowledge of the students post high school plan. It would allow me to create the best schedule in order for the student to succeed and give them the chance to take advantage every opportunity available.
Next I would focus our discussion on the credit deficiency and what’s needed to satisfy the California graduation requirements. This student is currently behind in English and Electives credits. The student would need to recover those credits in order to meet the state graduation requirements. Starting with English 11A. The student needs 4 credits. We will explore different credit recovery options. For this particular student because of the students past success with Edgenuity. I recommend completing their remaining English 11A and English 11B classes, during the Summer or during Zero or seventh period. Our next focus will be Electives, My plan is discuss placing the student In Art II because the student failed Art I. If the student passes Art II the student would satisfy the Visual and Performing art section of the A-G requirements. We will also discuss placing the student in another elective in order recover any deficient elective credits. Because we want to ensure that the student graduates.
Another thing I would ask the student if their planning on attending a four year college. What are you planning on majoring in? Depending on the students major. I would want them to take Trigonometry or Stats. For example, If the student say “I want to major in Psychology”. I would recommend they take Stats, because if your a Psychology major Stats is a college requirement. If the student is leaning more towards a Science field I would recommend Trigonometry. Because Trigonometry will better prepare the student for Calculus and also because most Science careers requires students take Calculus.
If the student plan is to join the Military I would still place them in a math course as a back up. Because the student may need math In case they score low on ASVAB test. Also discussing what the student wants to do in the Military is important. If the student is interested in the Military. I would be sure to connect the student with a Military recruiter.
If the student plan Is to work after high school. I would make sure to connect the student with the appropriate staff in the Career Center.
I would still recommend that the student take all necessary classes to put them back on A-G track since they are so close. Because I’m sure there are situations where the student changes their mind about college. If this would occur, because of the student meeting A-G requirements. They would still have the opportunity to attend a 4-year college.
Although our goal is to make sure that every student meet A-G requirements. Our ultimate goal is help the student be successful in whatever career choices they make after high school. By providing resources for every available opportunity. We as counselors are setting our students up for success.
