The restorative justice approach is different from the formal criminal justice system in that it tries to repair the broken relationship between the offender and the individuals they caused harm to and the community. With the restorative justice approach, the offender is required to take responsibility for their crimes and recreate a working community with the support of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation plays different roles in restorative justice. One of the roles is that it assists in repairing the broken relationship between the offender, their victims, and the community. When the offender is in rehabilitation, they are assisted to get back to being mentally, physically, and cognitively aware and assisted in avoiding their criminal behaviors, making them fit in the community. one of the restorative justice rehabilitation programs that can be used in adult and juvenile criminal justice system is the victim-offender mediation. This program involves a process where the offender and the victim meet with a third party who facilitates the meeting (Dandurand & Griffiths, 2006). The victim and the offender discuss how they will solve the broken relationship. One of the things that detract from the success of this rehabilitation program is that the parties involved may fail to come to an agreement.

STUDENT QUESTION #1 Lydia Kelly
Thanks for your post. Your explanation was extremely well put, a lot better than I did. I found this discussion question hard to put into words. Do you think juveniles or adults would have more trouble with victim-offender mediation?
STUDENT QUESTION #2 Edgar Etienne
I also believe victim-offender mediation can be a significant part of the offender's rehabilitation process. You stated that one of the things that would detract from the success of that rehabilitation would be that the parties fail to come to an agreement. What would you suggest for the next steps if an agreement cannot be formed while developing a restitution plan?
STUDENT QUESTION #3 Dominick Moreira
A failure to come to an agreement could be a big detractor in the rehabilitation mediation. I think there needs to be proper mediation techniques used to incentivize both parties to want to come to an agreement. What factors do you think might make the decision hard to come to an agreement?
