Chapter 15 (EOC)
STIDENT POST #1
Can layoffs be a sign of a healthy economy? In another discussion, I investigated how outsourcing and layoffs in a company could, in a way, actually benefit that company's workers. For example, it could lead to layoffs in one branch that in turn leads to salary raises or opening a new branch. Things advance much quicker in the path of creative destruction - old jobs are destroyed, but profits are increased and in turn put back into the economy. Other countries have things in place to prevent or at least impede these layoffs. That could be beneficial, however I just don't think Americans would ever go for that level of restriction.

Losing a job is hard for anyone, it takes a toll on you mentally and emotionally as well as financially, but unfortunately people lose their jobs everyday and are left in tough situations. I think that layoffs are not a sign of a healthy economy. I say this because when jobs are lost the unemployment rate goes up and people are left with with no jobs which equals no income. When you look at why people get laid off, there are many reasons that could have lead to their unemployment. Someone people lose their jobs because their company is going out of business, or is taking a huge cut because of the economy and has to cut down on employee wages. In cases like this I dont think it is fair for people that may have been working in a company for years to lose their job completely. I think they should be directed to other companies looking for employee, this way both the companies and the employees are in good hands. Other people lose their jobs because companies find other people to do it cheaper, this could be people in another company. I dont agree with people losing their jobs because labor is cheaper in another country. In the example of a supermarket taking the place of a mom and pop store; this is a true example, most people like shopping at big supermarkets rather than a small family owned business. I am huge on shopping at small mom and pop stores, I usually like to ask myself, why would I buy my coffee from somewhere like Starbucks who is the world’s third largest fast food chain in the world, with roughly 25,085 stores worldwide, when I can could purchase my coffee from a more authentic family owned coffee shop and give them a chance of being successful as well. Also when shopping at a local mom and pop store you are keeping dollars in the local economy! This also helps employe people locally!! I think the US should regulate layoffs in different parts of the country, to make sure all areas are running smoothly and to be able to help those that have higher unemployment rates.
