Hello group,

I apologize for the late entry, my wife is an elementary Spanish teacher and our

kiddos finished school last week so we are on a short vacation visiting family this

week. As stated in my week one discussion, EVM does a good job of establishing

whether or not your project is on schedule as well as on budget. However, I do

still believe that it is not the be all, end all for managing where you stand on a

project with regard to the schedule and budget. EVM is beneficial for

understanding where your project currently stands versus where it was planned to

be. It also provides an effective tool for measuring a projects performance when

needed.

This will come into play if you are running into times when your project is over

budget or any delays in the schedule are found as it gives you the ability to make

any necessary changes at that point in order to get the project back on track and

on budget. This allows for more better monitoring as well as better or more

control over the remaining milestones of the project going forward. This may also

give a project manager the ability to break down more complex milestones or

components to ensure that progress is being made towards keeping the project on

track and on budget.

Integrated cost and schedule control calculations were used in the case study and

I do believe that the project manager was able to assess and interpret them

correctly. It showed deficiencies in the technical infrastructure portion of the

project and that the software customization is both ahead of schedule as well as

under budget and a combined analysis shows that they are within the budget and

on schedule. To me this demonstrates the permeability of EVM as it can show

where your project lacking and where you are ahead. I would use any available

resources to shore up where we were behind while also keeping track of in this

case the software customization, to ensure it stays within its parameters which

should allow for a successful completion of the project. EVM allows you to

establish the strengths and weaknesses of where you stand and make the

necessary adjustments in order to hit your target or establish new ones while

keeping your end goal in sight.

Hi Kyle! I hope you had a great mini vacation with your family. I can see how EVM

could not be the end‐all, be‐all. I do agree that EVM is beneficial for

understanding where your project currently stands versus where it was planned to

be. It also provides an effective tool for measuring the performance of the project

when needed. EVM allows project managers to watch the project and see if it's

behind schedule/on time or over budget/ under budget which you basically

stated. This gives the managers better insight and control over the milestones. I

also believe that Integrated cost and schedule control calculations were used in

the case study, and I do believe that the project manager was able to assess and

interpret them correctly. One section of the project was on time and under

budget and the part was over time and over budget which shows the agility of

Kyle,

Good afternoon to you. Right on with detail of how the objective data through

EVM analysis assists you in identifying the shortcomings/strengths, but not fixing

them. The EVM analysis is just that, a fact checking tool that provides the

objective data to make informed decisions rather than assumption on

performance of your project. It is my belief, that in the case study that the pm

team failed in its obligatory responsibilities, as the technical infrastructure

components were behind schedule and over budget continuously. As you had

mentioned, further risk mitigation strategies should have been implemented to try

and right the ship for a successful completion of the project. Have a great rest of

your day.
