Student Learning Outcomes

When a student chooses a program, there are outcomes that the student needs to get out

of the program to help them succeed in their career. The things that they need to take away

from the program are called student learning outcomes. This tells the student what they should

be able to do at the end of the program and what they will be learning about during the courses

of the program. The student learning outcomes are different for each individual program. The

student learning outcomes impacts the student experience. The outcomes also have an impact

on the program evaluation and the revision of the program. The student learning outcomes

helps prepare the student for success in their career. The Bachelor

of Science in Health Administration has its own student learning outcomes. One of this

program’s student learning outcomes is to be able to analyze financial issues in the health

industry. Another learning outcome of the BSHA program is the student should be able to

explain the application of risk and quality management concepts in the health industry. Another

learning outcome is the student are able to apply management and adaptable leadership skills

in the health industry. Students should also be able to analyze the utilization and application of

technology within a health care organization. Students can also analyze a health care

organization from a market-based perspective. These are all things that the students who

complete the Bachelor of Science in Health Administration should take away from the program.

These are called student learning outcomes.

The impact of PSLOs have on the student experience has many benefits because

expectations are communicated in the syllabus via rubrics and grading standards, students will

know the expectations for performance and characteristics of evaluation, which will help

students to be more successful. Students will be able to reflect on the learning experience and

potential areas of growth. According to University of Phoenix, they would have developed skills

to allow them to identify the structure and role of delivery systems within the health care

industry. Examine the components of management and leadership within the health care

organizations. Analyze the utilization and application of technology within the health care

organization. Examine the application of risk and quality management concepts in the health

care industry. Examine the impact of legal and regulatory requirements on the delivery of health

care. Explore financial and economic issues in the health care industry. Students should be able

to demonstrate and perform professional duties in or out of the health care field. They will also

have the ability to apply knowledge from what they learned, concerning organization, and

management. With these skills learned through the help of PLSOs, students should be well

prepared to take on the health care industry. The impact using PSLOs also aims to help students

with professional competence and values, critical thinking and problem solving, communication,

information utilization, and the ability to collaborate. Using assessment to identify a program’s strengths and weaknesses allows faculty to

work toward continuous improvement based on their articulation of learning and behavioral

goals and outcomes for their graduates. PLSOs help students to develop the capacity to know

their own strengths, weaknesses, and motivation and is a necessary part of transformation into

adults being able to engage in “collaborative social relations with diverse others” a skill

employer now expects higher education to address (Magolda, 2008). Some educators work in

learning environments in which there has been overt direction to emphasize the need for

interpersonal skills to better interact with diverse groups, yet we recognize that ability as

valuable if not essential for success in professional careers.

Using PLSOs help with setting targets and targets can be set before gathering and

reviewing data or after. Helps determine if students are attaining the specified SLO at an

acceptable level. Faculty should think about and collectively decide the level which students

ought to perform (ideal state) rather than where faculty know that students can achieve and is

“safe” to assess. Setting targets can help improve learning outcomes. PLSOs can be used for

internal results such as, revising existing courses, adding or modifying assignments, tests,

readings, projects, etc., reviewing methodology of delivery course materials, incorporating

effective use of technologies, realignment between SLOs and teaching methods, modifying

assessments- revising assessment methods, modifying SLO, changing target level of

achievement, sequencing courses, adding or deleting courses, changing requirements/ pre

requisites, improving educational and support programs, identifying training needs/

professional development, and guiding resource allocation.

Program student learning outcomes have a strong impact on program evaluation and

revision. Program student learning outcomes are the direct result of assignments, quizzes and

tests, how students do on these directly impacts the way the assignments are changed or edited

in the future. This is how professors determine if and how effective assignments actually are, if

the majority of students are not doing well on a particular assignment then the instructor

should take into consideration that the assignment may have been confusing or it did not

provide the full amount of information needed to accurately understand the information.

Understanding the material in the assignments that are given in each class is intended to add an

element of knowledge needed to provide the proper education to be successful in the subject

that is being studied. It is important to talk with your instructor to make sure you ask any

questions to make sure that you understand how to complete an assignment properly if the

assignment is still confusing or unclear in any way seeking further help such as tutoring may be

necessary. Program student learning outcomes are also a result of test scores since test scores

reflect how well the information provided was understood as well as retained by each student,

this provides instructors with the information needed to maybe change the way questions are

asked or change them on future tests and evaluations so that they can be better understood on

the next group of students. Program student learning outcomes provide the essential basis for

instructors to understand how to best educate their students.

PSLO's prepare students for career success

by helping them develop a career profile that is goal directed and integrated into the student's

overall curriculum. The profile is designed to help guide the student's progress in their degree.

This is done by helping the students identify the knowledge, abilities and skills they are needed

to be successful once they have received their degree.

By developing a PSLO, students lean more effectively because they are in control of what

they are learning. Giving them the ability to focus on skills and knowledge that makes them

more appealing to employers in their field. Helping them distinguish themselves from others in

their field by creating a personal brand. Giving them the knowledge of what is expected once

they have entered the working field. Helping them connect with real world professional that can

communicate the expectations of the workplace. This program gives them the knowledge, skill

set and confidence to compete with peers in their field.

PSLO's gives students the ability to gain practical experience by helping them develop

career readiness through workshops, projects and scenarios they will encounter once they have

entered the work field. It helps them prepare for interviews by helping them develop strong

interviewing skills through practice. Helps them identify what competencies skills are required

in their profession. Teaching them the non- technical skills and knowledge required for them to

succeed in a professional environment. Making them better positioned for success in the work

place.
