Effects of the stroke to the patients and families

Stoke is a condition in which interruption of blood supply damages the brain. This is caused by bursting or leaking of blood vessels or the blocking of the artery, which is also known as ischemic stroke. A temporary disruption in the flow of blood mainly occurs and affects blood flow to the brain. This condition is characterized by numbness or paralyzing on one side of the body. The individual might also be having severe headaches and difficulty in walking because a part of the body has paralyzed. Problems in understanding what other people are saying and speaking questions as one experiences slur in your words and confusion because the brain cannot coordinate (Chino & Melvin, 2012).

This condition has greatly affected the lives of the affected people and their families. The patients themselves might not be in a situation to see clearly and understanding what people are saying. This might affect his occupation as he can no longer be able to work with such conditions. The family on the individual will be involved because they have to take care of the patient. The patient might have been the breadwinner of the family, and having no chance to work again might be a risk to the family (Fisher, 2009).

A nurse has a larger role to play in the life of a patient with stroke. Nurses can always encourage the patient by informing him or her about improvements in her health. Nurses and psychologists can exchange information based on the patient so that they are able to assist them mentally. The nurse should always talk to their patients so that they can feel that they are not alone in their journey. Talking to the patient will always improve the emotional state of the patient. For example, I have encountered a case where a stroke patient was to be discharged from hospital and yet she was not in a position to practice home based care. He had no family to take care of him. This came to the nurses’ attention and they decided to assign a specific nurse who will always go to the patient’s house to give him home based care. Nurses therefore have been of great help to stroke patients (M.PHIL, 2013).
