Stress Management

Stress Management

Stress management refers to the techniques used to control stress (Hiriyappa, 2013)

The techniques might include psychotherapy

In most cases, stress management is applied in the event of chronic stress

The major purpose is to improve a person’s functioning

Stress management basically refers to the methods used to deal with stress especially to reduce its effect

Through stress management, damage is avoided

2

Levels of Stress

Acute Stress: This is the most basic level of stress where an individual is thrilled and excited

One of the most common symptoms is emotional distress

Chronic Stress: This is the highest level of stress

It is characterized by giving up in life

This is caused by loss of valuable property or a loved one

Stress generally comes in two levels

Acute stress is basically the lowest level of stress than can be easily managed

On the contrary, chronic stress is when it is at an advanced stage

Chronic stress leads to effects such as contemplation of suicide

3

Goals and Objectives of the Program

The overall goal and objective of stress management is to improve the quality of life

It is noted that stress affects people negatively, therefore, stress management reverses the situation

In the acute level of stress, the program eliminates the problem thereby normalizing people’s lives

The major object of the program is to reduce and eliminate stress so that people can live normal lives

4

Cont’d

Stress management enables the affected to make the right decisions

When is stressed, their decision-making abilities change

Through stress management, they can relax

This improves their mental and psychological states

They can make better decisions

Stress management is also aimed at relaxing the affected so that they can make the right decisions

A stressed individual is most likely to make a decision out of anger

They need to relax

5

Populations and Respondents that Need this Training

The vulnerable population that needs this training involves the victims of the hurricane

They are directly affected and should be trained on how to manage stress

The non-governmental organizations also need it

This will help them in handling the affected

The victims of a disaster need to be provided with this training to enable them to manage their stress

Those who assist the victims should also be trained

This enables them to understand the victims as they take care of them

6

Cont’d

Hurricane victims should be trained on stress management

Victims of a disaster are usually stressed

They need emotional and psychological assistance

This is achieved through stress management

7

Implementation

Residents of the areas that will most likely be affected should be counseled prior to the event

Through this, they will accept the situation when it actually unfolds

This technique enables the probable victims to be more prepared for the disaster (Olpin & Hesson, 2015)

Prior to a disaster such as a hurricane, those who will be affected need to be counseled

This reduces the shock and stress when the disaster strikes

8

Cont’d

After the hurricane, the victims should be further counseled at the evacuation centers

They need to be encouraged to accept the situation and build their lives once again

Through this, they will once more find their purpose in life

They will effectively manage their stress and move on

After the disaster happens, the victims come to the reality of the matter

At this point, they also need to be talked

This technique improves the effectiveness of the stress management program

9

Enhancing Community Resiliency

The program will generally enable the community to manage stress (Cotton, 2013)

This implies that they will get back to normal life soon after the disaster

As much they the community will be affected, the members will be productive so as to sustain themselves

Stress management allows the members of the community to quickly resume normal lives

This implies that they will be productive despite the disaster

10

Summary

Stress management is necessary in the society

People go through different situations and they should be assisted on how to cope up

Through stress management, individuals are able to resume their normal lives

It is necessary to have a stress management program in place

Stress is a reality in life

It is important for stress management programs to be put in place to make sure the stress is effectively dealt with
