• STRAYER UNIVERSITY WRITING STANDARDS INFORMATION

  Do you wonder why there is a focus on citations, sources, and formatting? These areas are important because they ensure that your documents are credible and make a good first impression on your audience. 

  What are Strayer Writing Standards (SWS) and how will they help me?

  Different audiences have different requirements that they ask you to follow. These requirements are organized into what are called “style guides.” While the details change from format to format, two aspects remain consistent: formatting guidelines are designed so people write ethically (giving credit to others where credit is due) and professionally (making sure documents have a clean look and clear writing). 

  To help you meet these goals, we developed the Strayer Writing Standards, otherwise known as SWS. These standards are user-friendly guidelines that make it easier for you to learn how to format your papers and properly cite sources. Mastering SWS will make learning other style guides easier! 

  Following SWS guidelines will ensure:

  • Your writing is professional;
  • You avoid plagiarizing others (essential to ethical writing); and
  • You give credit to other people's ideas used in your work.

  How can I learn SWS style?

  First, review the Strayer Writing Standards style guide itself. It contains all the rules and guidelines.  

  Visit the SWS website for further explanations: 

  • Watch short videos about using SWS; 
  • Find answers to common questions; 
  • See a sample paper that uses SWS; and 
  • Practice writing citations with our source generator.
