Story Time in Agencies
Since I was unable to visit an agency in person, I referred to one of the agencies featured in one of the optional resources for the module, Bringing Storytime to the Long Wait for Social Services. In this agency, since a lot of people are waiting to be served, the waiting room is full of books to read. More so, there is a person who reads stories to children in the room to keep them engaged and prevent them from running about, making a lot of noise, or getting bored. When I look at this agency from the perspective of a worker of the agency, I think there is a lot of work to be done and that it is very tiring to serve all the clients effectively as well as on time. I think that it is tiresome to work at the agency and that the clients get tired or bored waiting in line to be served. Also, I think that the day to day challenges of working in the agency will be attending to the clients effectively because of their large number. Looking at the things from the perspective of the client, I think that the client might be viewing the workers of the agency as lazy people because they do not offer the services quickly. However, the clients will also be happy about the reading area and the storytelling for the kids. This is because it will keep them engaged, and they do not get bored as they wait for their turn to come.
Some of my suggestions to the agency in improving the experience of the clients is separating the clients according to their needs. For example, if a client has an issue with childcare, the client should be in line with people who have the same issue. Therefore, through grouping people according to their issues, it will be easier to reduce the waiting because they will be directed to the social worker who handles the issue. More so, the agency should increase the number of workers to meet the number of clients.
