Joy That Kills

Kate Chopin, the author of The Story of an Hour, applies several literary styles in the text to pass home his message effectively. The story covers the main characters like Mr. and Mrs. Mallard, Mrs. Mallard’s sister, and Richard, Mr. Mallard’s close friend. The Story of an Hour starts by describing a heart condition that Mrs. Mallard suffers from, and therefore requires careful treatment. For instance, the heart problem requires that sensitive news is broken to her in a careful manner, otherwise, the news could also cause more problem. A story develops the Mrs. Mallards husband dies in a rail accident. Richard, the closest friend to Mr. Mallard learns of the news among the first people as he works in a newsroom. He organizes himself to break the news to the wife, so as not to allow the insensitive people to do it. Mrs. Mallard’s sister also learns of the news and takes great care to express the news in a peaceful manner. Mrs. Mallard breaks down in a mourning mood. Richard and Mrs. Mallard sister stays with Mrs. Mallard to the last minute when the husband surprisingly returns. The surprise of seeing her husband alone excites Mrs. Mallard so much that she later dies due to her heart problem. Kate Chopin uses different literary devices to effectively pass the message home. Kate Chopin uses different literary styles to pass his message. He uses foreshadowing to describe the moment when Mrs. Mallard locks herself in a room to mourn the death of her husband and feels as if something is reaching out to her from the sky. “There was something coming to her, and she waited for it, fearfully” (Chopin 1981). This is a quote made by the author in describing the flow of events in the text. Foreshadowing indicates that the author has chosen to apply some styles to pass on the message. Kate Chopin uses different literary styles to pass his message. He also applies the unconditional theme as one of the major styles in getting his message home. The theme is expressed through a quote from Mrs. Mallard’s sister, while Mrs. Mallard locks herself in a room to mourn. “Louise, open the door, I beg open the door, you will make yourself ill” (Chopin 1981). The unconditional love is manifested by the action of Mrs. Mallard sister to follow her up and attempt to console her to the end, even though it turns to be a difficult moment to all. Kate Chopin uses different literary styles to pass his message. The author applies the independence from the past in a description of the flow of events in the story. The author mentions the quote as he describes the thoughts that Mrs. Mallard has about what the future holds for her without her husband. “But she saw beyond that bitter moment a long procession of years to come that would belong to her absolutely” (Chopin 1981). This style indicates that Mrs. Mallards remains hopeful that the future would be brighter even after the major loss of her husband. Kate Chopin uses different literary styles to pass his message. Chopin also uses the selfless behavior to describe the behavior portrayed by Mars Mallard's sister as well as Richard. The duo stays with Mrs. Mallard from the start of the story to the end. Even after the news has been delivered, they stay with her to ensure that she does not hurt herself. Her sister follows her to the bedroom to confirm that she is safe. Richard thinks about how risky it could be to deliver the sad news to Mrs. Mallard in an insensitive manner. He considers getting to her home as soon as possible so as to deter any other person from breaking the news first. “Louise, open the door, I beg open the door, you will make yourself ill” (Chopin 1981). This quote is an indication that Mrs. Mallard’s sister cared a lot about her sister during the tough moment. Kate Chopin succeeds in using different literary styles to tell his story. He uses a device, one after the other, and at times combines them effectively. The devices and the themes are quite effective in passing on the message that he intends for the audience. In addition, the literary work becomes more interesting with the use of various devices and the themes. The flow of the story is quite logical and interesting to follow. The use of the simple language also makes the text easy to understand and therefore easy to follow to the end. The use of a few characters makes it easy to comprehend the role that each play, and the main themes that have been used.
