Since the early 1980s, when IT companies began appearing on the scene, the cybersecurity field has lacked diversity (Geeks for Geeks, 2023). There has been an increase in the number of women and persons of color of all genders entering the cybersecurity field in recent years, but these groups are still underrepresented in the field. It has been suggested that the lack of diversity in cybersecurity is a result of a failing in the education system. In some cases, people are discouraged from entering the industry because stereotypes about it are prevalent. The lack of diversity and inclusion at tech companies has been pointed out by others as one of the problems.

According to the World Economic Forum, diversity levels in cybersecurity are as follows: black people make up 9% of the workforce, Hispanic people comprise 4%, Asian people make up 8%, and 24% of cybersecurity employees are female (“Why cybersecurity needs”, 2021).

These numbers could be improved in several ways. One way would be to educate people about the differences between culture types. According to Beebe & Ivy (2022, p. 124), there are two main types of cultural contexts: low-context and high-context. High-context cultures value non-verbal communication as part of communication, meaning that facial expressions and body language are critical to the meaning of a message. On the other hand, low-context cultures focus more on the information itself, and context is provided mostly by background information rather than just nonverbal cues (Beebe & Ivy, 2022, p. 124). By educating people about differences such as these, employees could find it easier to communicate with people of other cultures as they better understand ways to communicate their messages more clearly.

In the field of Applied Technology, diversity is crucial for creating innovative solutions that serve a broad range of needs. Unfortunately, the current diversity levels are not where they should be. "According to a recent study, many first-gen students incorporate a "maverick" identity into their self-concepts once they become the first in their families to attend college, believing themselves capable of academic success on a high level." (Beebe & Ivy, 2022, p. 32). It is no secret that the transition to college can be challenging, but as a first-gen student, you have already proven that you have what it takes to succeed. To improve diversity levels in Applied Technology, two key strategies can be implemented: Firstly, create more mentorship programs to guide and support underrepresented individuals in the field. Secondly, companies can work towards making their workplaces more inclusive by actively recruiting underrepresented individuals, offering equal opportunities, and implementing diversity and inclusion training programs. By doing so, we can ensure that the field of Applied Technology is more diverse and inclusive, ultimately leading to greater innovation and success.
