1. Summarize client’s current situation
2. Ask the KEY QUESTION (an open question):
- “What is the next step?”
- “What changes, if any, are you thinking of making?”
- “Where do we go from here?”
- “What happens next?”
- “What do you think you will do?”

3. Negotiate a change plan
a.) setting goals – utilize the KEY
QUESTION to develop goals
b.) considering change options BRAINSTORM or
PROVIDE A MENU “here are some of the things others have successfully tried, which do you think would work best for you?”
