Street, Elizabeth. “Overcoming Obstacles: Stephen Hawking Defies the ALS Odds.” Learning Liftoff, 2018.

Stephen Hawking has credited as the best scientist the 21st century has witnessed. At 21 years, Hawking was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) condition that causes brain and spinal cord nerves weakness and death. When he was diagnosed, the doctor said he could only live for about two and half years, however, Hawking overcome all the obstacles and lived for over 50 years. Ironically, when Hawking was healthy, he was bored with life and did not find anything he was doing enjoyable, but after the diagnosis, he found new perspective in his life (Street, 2018). He achieved so much that he could not have enjoyed had the adversity of sickness not stricken. Hawking focused on his abilities and studied the origin of universe which contributed to a lot of scientific breakthrough and prompted his extensive award and scholarly honors. By 1970s, the condition was worse and he developed slurred speech and only family members could understand him, but managed to overcome the challenge. In 1985, Hawking suffered from pneumonia and lost his speech (Street, 2018). In his last years, he could only utilize a computer device in his cheek where there was muscle remaining to communicate. Hawking never regretted or thought about his disability because according to him, he led a positive and normal life.

This article will be important in writing my paper because it will expound on the adversities people face. It is not just physical challenges people can overcome, but they can also overcome medical conditions that are life threatening and lead as normal life as possible. The paper will help in elaborating how one can focus on his ability and ignore his disabilities and make great contribution in life uncommon of abnormal people. What Hawking achieved when he was under 24 hours ventilation is unbelievable and he can be used to encourage people with chronic diseases that they can also overcome the adversity of failing body organs through being focused, positive thinking, maximizing on the time given and forgetting about the weaknesses.
