Introduction
A subnetwork also referred to as the subnet refers to a logical subdivision of an IP network. In this regard therefore, Subnetting generally refers the process of dividing a network into more than one networks. Therefore, Subnetting leads to the logical division of an IP address into two fields which includes the network number also known as the routing prefix as well as the rest field also known as the host identifier. This paper examines subnetting conventions because it is an important aspect to understand to ensure an effective utilization of the subnets by BallotOnline.
Subnetting usually involves the subdivision of the IP. The IP Subnetting refers to a general process of dividing a large IP network in to smaller IP networks. In this process, multiple small manageable networks are generally created from a single large IP network. IP addresses facilitates connectivity to the network, however in order to effectively use the addresses that are available, it is important to understand for instance, that when more than 16000000 hosts are put in a single network, then, this network is likely not to work because of broadcast as well as collision. On the other hand, putting less hosts means that the remaining addresses becomes wasted. Therefore, in order to reduce and eliminate these issues, subnetting becomes quite important in such cases. This is because, subnetting will help in providing an effective way of dealing with such a situation. Subnetting will generally enable BallotOnline to create the smaller networks from a single large network (Blackbot, 2019). This will help to meets the requirements of the hosts while at the same time providing various networking advantages.
Generally, an IP Address has two parts which includes the Network part as well as the Host part. In this regard, IP Subnetting involves addition of one more part which in this case is the “Subnet Part”. This implies that some bits are borrowed from the Host part, and then used for the Subnetting process, this is indicated below:
Usually, for the Subnetting process, the Subnet Masks are usually used. Subnets masks refers to the 32-bit addresses such as the IP Addresses. The Subnet Masks are usually utilized together with the IP Addresses. In this representation, the 1s represents the network parts, while the 0s represents the host parts (Blackbot, 2019).

For instance, the Subnet Masks can be shown using the four octets like IP addresses (255.255.255.0) or it can be shown like /X. In this case, for the 255.255.255.0 Subnet Mask, we can use /24 which indicates that the first 24 bit is full of 1s and it is a network part.
CIDR versus VLSM
There are typically two significant terms as afar as Subnetting is concerned, these two terms include the:
· CIDR (Classless Inter Domain Routing)
· VLSM (Variable Lenght Subnet Mask)
CIDR (Classless Inter Domain Routing) -This involves the utilization of the IP addresses independent from their traditional IP Classes. This simply means that CIDR involves the utilization of the IP addresses without classes. Generally, this one is utilized on the addresses which are intended to or will advertise to the internet. Therefore, CIDR is used in the Internet Service Provider part.
VLSM (Variable Lenght Subnet Mask) – This involves the utilization of the different Subnet Mask for different sun networks. It refers to the process that permits the utilization of various Subnet Masks while providing various division of a network into sub networks. This might be considered as a Subnet of subnets. Generally, this is typically used in a company as well as in smaller networks to use the IP address spaces ideally "Private addressing and Subnetting large networks," 2000).
Special Subnets
It is important to understand that in Subnetting some Subnet Masks are used specifically sometimes, they include the /24, /30, /31/ and /32.
· The /24 refers to the Subnet Mask which is basically utilized in the local networks by default.
· The /32 refers to the Subnet Mask that is basically utilized on the Loopback as well as on the System interfaces.
· The /31 refers to the Subnet Mask that is typically utilized on the point-to-point links.
· The /30 is generally utilized in Service Provider Networks for point-to-point connections.
