Step 3 Organize your supporting evidence, Making a Change

Quiz Instructions

(Don't worry! This is not a quiz!)

Use this assignment to create a detailed outline of your narrative paragraph about a major change that you made in your life that has been really hard.  Use the supporting evidence that you pulled together in the previous discussion board.  We're also going to tweak our topic sentence, add transitions, and put everything in order.

Flag question: Question 1

Question 12 pts

Write out your topic sentence.

Remember that your topic sentence must be a complete sentence; it is NOT just a title. It should clearly identify the major change that you made in your life that was really hard.

Example:

Even though it was hard, I made major lifestyle changes in order to bring my blood pressure under control.

Question 21 pts

Type out your first step in the narrative as a complete sentence. Include a transition such as "first" or "the first step in the process."

Example:

First, my doctor told me that losing some weight would be key to lowering my blood pressure.

Question 31 pts

Next, write out at least two sentences in which you describe the first step in more detail. Remember, the more specific, the better!  Include interesting details, like names and descriptive words.

Example:

I've said for years that I wanted to lose a few pounds, but my high blood pressure scared me into action. The main change I made was to start walking every evening. It started out with just 30 minutes a day, but soon I was walking over 90 minutes every day after work. I bought a FitBit to start counting my daily steps and made a game out of beating my weekly step goals. In three months, I lost fifteen pounds.

Question 41 pts

Type out your second supporting point in the narrative as a complete sentence. Add a transition like "next," "second," or "another."

Even though writing a narrative is telling a story, it should still have structure.

Example:

Next, I needed to start drinking fewer Cokes and more water.

Question 51 pts

Write out at least two sentences describing your next part of the story in specific detail.  Remember that little details like sights, sounds, and smells make writing more interesting!

Question 61 pts

Type out your third supporting point as a complete sentence. Add a transition "next," "third," or "finally."

Example:

Finally, I knew that I had to make some changes to my diet, which was definitely the hardest part.

Question 71 pts

Add specific details to your third supporting point. Keep everything in chronological order.

Question 81 pts

Are you done, or do you have a fourth step? Do you have more? If you have more supporting points to finish the story, list them here and add details to each one:

Question 91 pts

Wrap everything up in a conclusion sentence. This sentence should restate that you made an important life change and that it was difficult.
