Logan’s Sporting Goods

Logan is the owner of one of the oldest sporting goods stores in Alberta, Canada. The store has been developing many problems lately, mainly because it uses an outdated COBOL-based system. For the store to continue being successful, Logan has decided that it is time to hire an IT consulting company to build a new system that will be called Logan Sports System (LSS).

Logan’s first request is that the system must be available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. With this availability, Logan would want the system to be web-based and operate with all web browsers so that customers will be able to make online purchases. With online purchases being available, Logan would like to make sure that the system gives the ability for customers to create a personal account so that the store can store their data and payment information. To avoid losing data from hackers, Logan would want the customer and payment information to be encrypted and secured. For extra precaution, if the customers were to have many unsuccessful attempts, the system should keep track of the number of failed logins in an audit trail so that the employee can notify that customer. The system must allow the customer to browse sports equipment through their predefined categories (football, basketball, baseball, etc.). Once the customer is interested in a particular product, the system would enable them to add it to their cart. Once finished shopping, the system will allow the customer to proceed with payment. To avoid traffic on the website, the system shall be able to process 100 payment transactions per second in peak load.

When receiving the online orders, only store employees who are authorized can access and edit the system. When logging in, the system shall ask for the employee’s ID and password. Logan wants the employees to be able to view the real-time inventory level by each sports category. If the inventories were low, the employees must notify their supplier to send more items so they can avoid delayed orders. The system must also allow employees to view the number of orders that are needed to be fulfilled. To avoid late orders, the system must check for orders that are scheduled to arrive past their shipping date. If there are any late orders, the system would need to notify the customer by email. Additionally, the system must keep track of each customer’s orders from the previous 6 months.
