JPS Requirements Determination

Johnson’s Pharmacy is an up and coming pharmacy that is located in Washington. Their owner, Craig, hired an IT consulting company to develop a new database system that is web-based (called Johnson’s Paramedical System, or JPS). This new system will replace their previous system of conducting and documenting all business tasks in paper form. Overall, the project for the new system has been a success for the company. The system needs to be easy to use by all employees including sales, representative, and managers. Since Johnson’s Pharmacy computers are all Apple based, the system needs to run with Apple software. With the pharmacy constantly growing, JPS must be web-based. Craig would like to make sure that the system can display all words in English, Spanish, and/or French so that customers and employees who struggle with English do not have to worry about translating. For employees, the system must uniquely identify each staff member by his or her 10 digit phone number. Craig wanted to make sure that each one of his employees is getting their hours, so the system must allow each employee to review the number of hours they work during the week. Furthermore, the employees shall be forced to change their password the next time they log in if they have not changed it within the last six months. Besides the pharmacy being a pharmacy, there is also a clinic for sick patients (any age) that either can come in or make an appointment. To make things easier for the nurse practitioner and physician assistants, the system must generate a list of patients each day who are expected to attend appointments that day. To help out with clinic waiting time, the system must check for patients that are late. In addition, Craig wanted to make sure that the system allows physicians to order medications and the employees should be able to check if they have the medications available. When checking for the availability, it should take less than two seconds for the system to load the data. With this, it should be easy to let customers know that their medicine is ready. Finally, with the old system, anyone who had access to the office can see the payroll. With the new system, Craig wanted to make sure that only employees can access that system. Furthermore, he wanted to make sure that the payroll system shall ensure that the employee salary data can be accessed only by him and other authorized users. If someone were to enter JPS, each unsuccessful attempt by that user to access an item of data shall be recorded on an audit trail. Craig also wanted the system to not display religious symbols or words associated with mainstream religions. Craig also wanted to make sure that the system would allow employees to view their hours while registering their vacation requests. Finally, Craig wanted the system to be available Monday – Friday from 6 AM to 11PM (company hours); during holiday hours, the system must be shut off.
