ACADEMIC ENGLISH FOR UNIVERSITY STUDIES ASSESSMENT ACTIVITY A – PORTFOLIO 1

TASK OUTLINE:

The Academic English Portfolio has two parts; Part A includes checkpoints on Moodle throughout Term 1 and culminates with

Part B, a short research essay.

Part A – Checkpoints

Each checkpoint revises key academic skills and therefore ensures the ability to complete future assessment activities to a

higher standard. The academic skills assessed in the checkpoints are listed below:

 Academic Integrity

 Academic writing conventions – Paraphrasing, Summarising, Quoting, In-text referencing and Reference Lists

 Listening and note-taking

 Organisation and planning

 Academic writing style, mechanics and vocabulary

Part B - Write a short research essay

Students complete a 500-word research essay using sources provided. Students will be required to integrate information from

the designated sources in their response to a question provided. Students are assessed on their ability to prepare a proposal,

implement draft feedback and complete a final essay submission.

TASK DOCUMENTS:

(via Moodle) Activities are accessible via the Academic English Moodle site and are password protected.

SUBMISSION METHOD: Online - as per Moodle instructions for each Checkpoint.

LATE SUBMISSION:

Assessment tasks submitted or performed after the due date without an approved extension of

time will ordinarily be met with a penalty of 5% of the percentage grade per working day

late, up to a maximum of five working days.

If the assessment is submitted/performed after five working days, a grade of 0% will be

applied.

Requesting an assignment extension: if a student wishes to apply to an assignment

extension, they need to fill out and submit the “Assignment Extension Application” form

found in Student Support on Moodle at least 24 hours before the due date of their assessment

item and provide any relevant supporting evidence (e.g. medical certificate, letter from

parent/homestay).
