1. Create a social science research question that you would like to learn more about. Note that everyone should create a unique question. Example, “Does alcohol abuse increase the rate of domestic violence?”
2. What is the population of interest for your specific question and why?
3. What type of sampling method (name the method and define it) would you use to collect data to answer your question, and why?
4. Describe a study that you might perform to answer your question. Include whether your study is experimental or observational, and why.
Research Question: Does snoring affect couples’ relationship?
Population of Interest
The population of interest is unmarried couples and divorced partners. The primary reason for this population is the nature of the research question. Snoring only happens when a person is sleeping. Couples do sleep on the same bed. Couples feel the discomfort and understand the pain. There have been reports among sexual partners that one either of the partner is not comfortable about snoring. Unmarried partners forms the right population of interest. This is because as couples court, they are still testing waters, whether to proceed and get married or terminate the relationship. In this stage, both partners are still on testing mode, literally.
Behavior matters most. There are different habits that each partner is looking for in a life partner. Some habits and behaviors are tolerable, others can really end the relationships. At this stage, partners are open. They can express themselves freely, unlike when they are married.
Divorced ones have a lot of negative experiences about their x spouses. They are freer to express their discomfort when they were in the relationship. They know very well what make relationships not to proceed. They are therefore willing to give all negative comments about their ex-lovers. Married couples have are in relationship and have decided to put up with some habits, although they might be happy. They have decided to live with the discomfort. The likelihood of getting a good response is minimal.
Sampling Method
The best sampling method that will be used in this case is no-probability sampling method. In this method, individuals in a population does not have equal chances of being represented. The odds for a member being picked as a sample cannot be calculated. This method does not involve the use of random selection. It depends on the researcher to pick the right sample based on his/her subjective judgment ("Find the Best Sampling Technique for Your Research", 2018).
There are many types of non-probability sampling. For this research, I will use purposive sampling technique or judgmental sampling technique. This method is used when the researches have sufficient knowledge of the population and the purpose of the research. In this case, I will use this method because I need unmarried couples and divorced ones. I need to make sure that those that I will interview can fit the purpose of the research. It is also hard to use probability sampling method when finding the right sample.
The Study
I will chose a two institutions, that include hospital and educational and a company that has more than 50 employees. I will then ask around for anyone who is divorced or in a relationship but not married. The potential respondents will be of either gender. Having a questionnaire containing relevant questions concerning snoring of the other partner while asleep, like if the partner is or was snoring while asleep, if the behavior is a nuisance and whether it affected their relationships in one way or the other as the major factor.
This study that I will use is an observational study. It is non experimental and therefore it does not manipulate sample. Cross-sectional study involves collection of data from a given population at a given time ("Experimental Research vs. Observational Studies", 2018). It is only the response from the sample that I want and not manipulating them to behave in a certain way.
