WEEK 1 TECHNOLOGY ASSIGNMENT

Collecting data and creating graphs - Collect data from 30 people from your work, school, neighborhood, family, or other group.  Ask a quantitative question, such as, “How many pets do you have?” or “How many college classes have you taken?”   Explain your population, sample, and sampling method and what level of measurement your data is (nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio).  Use technology (StatCrunch, Statdisk, or Excel) to create a Histogram of your data and explain the shape of the distribution (bell-shaped, uniform, right-skewed, or left-skewed) and possible reasons why the distribution is this shape.  Explain the importance of this data, what you find interesting about the data, and why the public should know. Look up a newspaper, e-pub, or journal article that confirms or denies the results of your small study.

WEEK 2 TECHNOLOGY ASSIGNMENT

Generating Summary Statistics - Using the data you collected last week, use technology (StatCrunch, Statdisk, or Excel) to find the mean, median, mode, standard deviation, and five number summary.  Explain how these statistics describe your data and what they suggest about your sample.  Create a boxplot of the data and identify any outliers in your data by using the methods on page 121 of your textbook and discuss how those outliers are affecting your results (provided picture of page 121 below)

WEEK 3 TECHNOLOGY ASSIGNMENT

Calculating Binomial Probabilities - Suppose you work for an airline and you are taking reservations for a flight on an aircraft that has 152 seats.  You know, based on historical flights trends, that if you sell a single ticket there is a 91% chance that the person with the ticket will actually show up for the flight.  You decide to try to make a little extra money by overbooking your flight and you sell 160 tickets hoping that not more than 152 people will actually show up for the flight (note: this is a common business practice!  Click here to watch a video that explains why)

Explain how this scenario meets the four requirements in the definition of a Binomial Distribution (page 200) provided here.

Identify what n and p are in this example

Use technology (StatCrunch, Statdisk, or Excel) to calculate the probability that if you sell 160 tickets for your flight, more passengers will show up than there are seats available (again, the plane has 152 seats total).  Post an image of your technology output using the Insert/Edit Image feature in Blackboard (no attachments!)

Based on this probability, do you think it is a wise business practice to oversell your flight in this manner?   Explain.

WEEK 4 TECHNOLOGY ASSIGNMENT

Determining Normality - Download the data set “Body Data” in your preferred technology format (StatCrunch, Statdisk, Excel).  Select 3 columns of your choice from the list below.  For each of the 3 columns you selected, determine whether the data is normally distributed in two ways:  1. Create a Histogram of the data and determine if it is approximately bell-shaped, and 2. Create a Normal Quantile Plot and determine if the pattern of points is reasonably close to a straight line.  After examining these two graphs together, decide whether the data is normally distributed and explain your findings.  Paste your graphs using the Insert/Edit Image button (no attachments!)

WEEK 5 TECHNOLOGY ASSIGNMENT

Confidence Intervals - Filtered cigarettes are allegedly healthier than nonfiltered cigarettes.  One reason for this is because they contain less tar.

Download the data set “Cigarette Contents” in your preferred technology format (StatCrunch, Statdisk, Excel).  Column 1 denotes the amount of tar per cigarette (milligrams) in king-sized cigarettes that are nonfiltered.  Column 4 denotes the amount of tar per cigarette (milligrams) in menthol cigarettes that are filtered. 

Using technology (StatCrunch, Statdisk, or Excel) compute a 95% confidence interval for the mean amount of tar in each cigarette group and paste the screen printouts obtained from the technology.  Post an image of your technology output using the Insert/Edit Image feature (no attachments!)  Describe in words what each confidence intervals represents.  

Compare the confidence intervals obtained for the filtered and nonfiltered cigarettes.  Based on your confidence intervals, do you see evidence that the filtered cigarettes are healthier?  Explain.

 

WEEK 6 TECHNOLOGY ASSIGNMENT

Hypothesis Test - Download the data set “Airport Speeds” in your preferred technology format (StatCrunch, Statdisk, Excel).  Column 2 denotes the data speeds (Mbps), taken from 50 different airports, for the carrier Verizon.  Column 4 denotes the data speeds (Mbps) for the carrier AT&T from the same 50 airports.

Using technology (StatCrunch, Statdisk, or Excel) compute the mean data speed for each of the two carriers, Verizon and AT&T.  Provide a printout of your technology output using the Insert/Edit Image feature (no attachments!)    Based on this, which carrier do you think has the faster speed?

Next, using technology (StatCrunch, Statdisk, or Excel) conduct a hypothesis test to test your claim about which carrier has the faster speed.  Explain which test you conducted and why that is the appropriate test for this example.  Provide a printout of your technology output using the Insert/Edit Image feature (no attachments!) Explain your conclusion in statistical and non-statistical terms and how you arrived at that conclusion.  Be sure to follow the 8-step procedure on page 360, using technology to do your calculations.  You should include your null and alternative hypothesis (in English and in symbolic form), your significance level, whether you are conducting a right tailed, left tailed, or two tailed test, p-value, and conclusions.

 

WEEK 7 DISCUSSION BOARD

Correlation - There was a not a placement test for this class, but do you think there would be a positive correlation between a placement test score and the final grade in this class?  What other variables do you think would have a positive correlation with the final grade in this (or any) class?  What variables would have a negative correlation with a final grade in a class?  Look up a study that finds a correlation between grades and some other variable.  Describe the variables, the study, the methods used, whether the correlation is positive or negative, and how this relates to your life.  Be sure to provide a reference!
