Statement of Purpose for Master: KAUST University

I was born in the era of computing and technological revolution and before the age of 9, my father had already introduced me to the computer world and it was the beginning of my curiosity to experiment and dabble with diverse computer applications. The foremost fascination in my life regarding computers was how a monitor and a cable could open new windows to a new universe in addition to the curiosity of fathoming the logic behind the possibility of ravishing invention. The noteworthy coincidence between my childhood experiences and love for computers with the escalation of contemporary computing technology reveal my natural devotion to pursue a computer science. In 2000, I enrolled a course in Computer Science at Dammam University and acquired 4.51/5 GPA upon the completion of Computer Science degree in 2014 with knowledge and skills in computer science fields such as algorithms, artificial intelligent, software engineering & development, networking, and security. Other computer science districts that were of major interest include Computer Networks, C-Programming and Microprocessors with the key fascination of Intel 8086 potential in working together with its cousin microprocessors in revolutionizing the computer working for decades. I was a team leader in one of the class project, shipment tracking, where my noteworthy proposal was the solution of managing and tracking warehouses using two-levelled pellet and tracking package. The panel’s complements to the project gave it the title of best-of-the-year and master-level project showing a reflection of my unique way of thinking, out-of-the-box ideas and straight focused mind with a strong mindset. Some of my noteworthy experience include my current career as an IT Support Engineer at Interserve, a British Organization dealing with hardware, network and security aspects of IT. The viewpoint of my longstanding devotion to acquire skills and knowledge in the fast-changing advancing industry is my primary objective of continuing my education in an elite, competitive and challenging environment at KAUST University.

My academic plans in KAUST will be to continue revitalizing my dreams and interest in fast computing and biotechnology as the contemporary developing fields of computer science. I believe that gaining knowledge and skills in both fields is important due to their high impact and ability to save people lives and enhance their ways of living. My plan is to expand knowledge in biotechnology especially in the field of bionics which motivate evolutionary computation through the evolution simulation to produce well-optimized solutions such as bionic eyes computation. My research plans at KAUST will be to be part of the bionic eyes research community in the quest to help the growing number of blind people whose global number currently stand at 40 million with more than 124 million having low vision. I will be glad to be a successful researcher in the subject where a many have not succeeded with only a few stuck at thesis. Currently, FDA has approved only one bionic eye system to be used, Argus II which contains a small camera fixed on a pair of eyeglasses, and an electrodes on the person’s retina. Though it helps people to distinguish light, movement and shapes, read large printed books and cross the street safely, it has limitations that it has only 60 electrodes out of the a million required and it only flashes black and white dotted pictures. I want to enhance knowledge and skills of running a new bionic system hence helping the humanity and improving the world as the two of the main reasons for interest in computer science.

Working at Interserve Company is responsible for my industry-hardened skills and knowledge in Computer Science, but I believe that experience and further academic growth at KAUST will further enhance the abilities and knowledge. One of top priorities of preceding my graduate study is to have enough skills and information to transfer my mind’s thoughts and ideas to real-life applications. The rationale for choosing KAUST is because of its proven longstanding reputation as one of the best schools for graduate studies worldwide. One of the aspects that will shape my experience at KAUST is multiculturalism and diversity as two great resources for learning which the institution gathers from the great minds from all over the world which make the environment multicultural. KAUST’s master courses and computer science research focuses on the most areas that I am interested in especially computational biosciences and high performance computing majors. Furthermore, the institution has the support of different research centers such as visual computing center. Since the institution has partnership with many powerful local and foreign organizations and institutions, I anticipate to benefit from appropriate right resources and great learning environments that will offer right tools to expand my knowledge and skills for use in practical life. I believe that upon graduation from KAUST, it will have experience, social and professional skills and knowledge in bionic arms, Computer Networks and other as aspects in the context of Helping Humanity.
