Course Description This course is a study of basic descriptive and inferential statistics. Topics include types of data, sampling techniques, measures of central tendency and dispersion, elementary probability, discrete and continuous probability distributions, sampling distributions, hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, and simple linear regression. Prerequisite(s): MATH 111 or MATH 140 or MATH 143 or MATH 241. Course Goals Enable students to select and apply appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to analyze varying types of data, to defend the rationale for selection of the techniques, and to effectively communicate results of their analyses. Learning Outcomes Upon course completion, students will be able to:
1. Construct, compute, and use appropriate graphical displays and numerical measures to make accurate conclusions about data.
2. Identify various discrete and continuous probability distributions, identify skewness and symmetry in a distribution, and compute appropriate parameters and probabilities associated with probability distributions including sampling distributions.
3. Explain the importance of randomness in sampling, select and apply appropriate sampling techniques.
4. Select and apply appropriate procedures to estimate parameters and test claims about parameters.
5. Given a set of data, choose appropriate software, use the software to analyze the data, and accurately interpret the output.
6. Communicate results of statistical analyses in a clear and concise manner.
7. Be a critical consumer of statistics presented by the media and other sources.
8. Accurately interpret statistics presented, identify ways in which they might be subject to misinterpretation, and apply ethics to the interpretation and presentation of statistics.

9. Apply concepts addressed in the course to problem solving, including problems related to aviation/aerospace.

Graded activities in this course earn scores from zero to 100. The Canvas Grade Center then calculates and weights scores. This means that while you earn the same score for all graded activities in the course, the weights are different. Your final grade is based on the weighted score.

Discussions Discussion activities require you to participate, calculate, interpret, and report on a variety of topics. For each of the discussion activities, you should make your initial post to the discussion forum early in the module week, then return later in the same module week and respond to the posts of at least two classmates. Discussion posts must be meaningful. Posts like, “I agree,” or “Good post!” will not count for credit. Your instructor will use the Discussion Grading Rubric that is in each discussion. The discussion activities are worth 15% of your final grade. Your active participation in the discussion activity is mandatory. You are expected to comment on several of the initial discussion threads. Assignments Assignment activities require you to analyze data initially created in a discussion, draw a conclusion, and then report the information in a Memorandum of Understanding document. You are expected to follow a specific format for the memo and use superior writing skills to concisely report information. The assignment activities are worth 15% of your final grade. MyStatLab Homework MyStatLab Homework assignments allow you to practice learned concepts to gain proficiency. You have three (3) attempts to accomplish each homework assignment. MyStatLab is a virtual mathematics lab. Help is available within MyStatLab for each problem in the assignment. Homework is where course material is learned. Quizzes and tests are where learning is demonstrated. Assignments are due by the end of the module in which they are assigned. If your assignment is late, there is a 10% penalty applied every day after the due date. The penalty is only applied to questions you have not answered. The MyStatLab Homework assignments are worth 10% of your final grade. MyStatLab Quizzes Often, students rely too much on the “helps” that are available in the MyStatLab homework assignments and do not learn how to correctly answer problems when those “helps” are not available. MyStatLab Quizzes give you an opportunity to determine whether you have really learned the material. Each quiz has a maximum of ten (10) questions, and you have 90 minutes to complete in one (1) attempt. You may take each quiz twice. “Helps” available in the MyStatLab homework assignments will not be available in the quizzes. Quizzes are due by the end of the module in which they are assigned. If your quiz is late, there is a 10% penalty applied every day after the due date. The penalty is only applied to questions you have not answered. MyStatLab Quizzes are worth 20% of your final grade.

Cumulative Midterm Exam You will take the course Cumulative Midterm exam in Module 5 using MyStatLab. It will cover all material covered from Module 1 thru Module 4. You have one (1) attempt to take the Cumulative Midterm exam and have two hours (120 minutes) to accomplish. The Cumulative Midterm exam is worth 20% of your final grade. Cumulative Final Exam You will take the course Cumulative Final exam in Module 9 using MyStatLab. It will cover all material covered from Module 1 thru Module 8. You have one (1) attempt to take the exam and have two hours (120 minutes) to accomplish. The Cumulative Final exam is worth 20% of your final grade. Additional Information You are reminded to keep electronic copies of all materials submitted as assignments, discussion posts, and emails; until after the end of the term and a final grade is posted. Online Learning This course is offered through Embry-Riddle Online (Canvas) and runs nine (9) weeks. The first week begins the first day of the term and ends at midnight EDT/EST (as applicable) seven days later. Please note that all assignments, unless otherwise indicated, are due by 11:59 EDT/EST on the date shown. Success in this course requires in-depth study of each module as assigned, timely completion of assignments, and regular participation in forum discussions. Late work should be the exception and not the rule and may be downgraded at the discretion of the Instructor, if accepted at all. Unless all work is submitted, the student could receive a failing grade for the course. Extensions may be granted for extenuating circumstances at the discretion of the Instructor and only for the length of time the Instructor deems appropriate. The most important element of success in an online course is to communicate with your Instructor throughout the term. Conventions of “online etiquette,” which include courtesy to all users, will be observed.
