Stakeholder Management

Behind every project, there are stakeholders. According to Kerzner (2017), for every project to be termed successful, it should meet or exceed the expectations of the stakeholders. Within project, stakeholders are individuals who have vested interests in project in which their actions can impact positively or negatively the outcomes of a project. According to Waheed, (2016), these are entities that tend to be actively engaged in the undertaking of a project or have some interest in the project. Waheed further accounts that within project there are the case of the key stakeholders in which their impact can either cause a project to be termed a failure or a success. Additionally, despite that a project might go to the length of attaining its deliverable but if the stakeholders are unhappy, then then the project can be termed as a failure.

Within a project, there are a number of different stakeholders with each stakeholder impacting the project differently. The first case of the project stakeholders is the case of the top management in which these at the top officials within the project. According to Waheed (2016), some of the top management stakeholders include the president of a company, the vice president and the chief executive officer. Within projects, these are the individuals that tend to provide the synergy and the desired direction the company should take.

The other stakeholder is the case of the project team. According to Kerzner (2017), the project team within project management include those individuals that are employed within the project. Within these project team, the project manager is vital in ensuring that these employees work best to ensure that the objectives of the project are reached. In this case, Waheed (2016) accounts that the project manager is needed in performing the managerial decisions such as leading, directing the team project members and also offering support to these teams. However, as much as these members are essential within a project, there can be some issues that can be encountered when handling these employees. For example, if the project team is made up of borrowed as denoted by Waheed, they do not necessarily report to the project manager. Additionally, being employees may also include instances of missed deadlines.

Additionally, there is the case of customers in which there are both the case of internal and external customers. According to Waheed (2016), the internal customers are those individuals within the organizations that meets the need of the internal demand. On the other hand, the external customers are the customers that will end up consuming the project. Additionally, the government is also a major stakeholder. Based on the definition, stakeholders are entities that have vested interest on the project that in one way, their actions get to affect these projects. With the government, it is heavily involved in projects through regulation such as those present within the healthcare industry and the financial sector. On the other hand, the case of supplier and contractors cannot be forgotten. Supplier are the entities that are there to provide the resources that are needed in facilitating the ongoing of the projects.

Question

Projects tend to be associated with different stakeholders such as the project employees, the government, local authorities, and the suppliers. With these different stakeholders, each tend to be associated with different vested interests. According to Kerzner (2017), with the life cycle of a project, the various stakeholders associated within a given project tend to change. Taking the case of the Michigan Health Facility, it can be said that the project has been associated with different stakeholders from the point it was initiated to the point it was handed over the project owner.

According to Pinto (2019), at the initial phase of a project, some of the stakeholders at this point include the case of the project manager in which this project manager would want to ensure that the project has the required resources in meeting its objectives. Additionally, there would be the case of the project employees who would want to ensure that as much as they are working to meet the project objectives, the project has the conducive working objectives.

Once the project has been handed over the project owner, the stakeholders are expected to change. On this note, take the case of the Michigan Medical facility, at first the patients had no interest when the project was in its execution phase, but now that the facility is in full operation, they become new stakeholders in which they are seeking better and improved medical services. On the other hand, Kerzner (2017) state that within the life cycle of a project, the suppliers will always change. In this case, when the Michigan Medical Facility was under construction, the suppliers mostly were associated with building materials. However, note that this facility is in operations, most of the suppliers would now be based on medical supplies.
