Stages of Change

Introduction

Here you will want to identify the behavior that you are changing, and provide some information about what this change has been like, etc. You will also want a clear thesis statement such as, “In this paper, I will apply each of the stages of change to my health behavior. In addition, I will describe the processes of change that enable each of the stages as well as the preferred intervention. Finally, I will discuss my overall confidence in my ability to change this behavior.”

Precontemplation

Here you will apply this stage to your health behavior. Write 3-4 sentences (1 paragraph). Be sure that you are using correctly formatted in text citations (Glanz, Rimer, & Viswanath, 2015). Remember that when you cite this same text in the same paragraph, it will look different (Glanz et al., 2015).

Processes of Change

Here you will describe the processes of change that enable the precontemplation stage of change (e.g., consciousness raising, dramatic relief, self-reevaluation, environmental reevaluation). You will want to cite your sources using APA formatting (Glanz, Rimer, & Viswanath, 2015).

Intervention

Describe the preferred intervention for the precontemplation stage. The goal is to increase awareness of need for change. For smoking cessation, this might include providing personalized feedback on risks of tobacco use, helping the patient identify reasons for tobacco use, helping the patient identify potential benefits of stopping tobacco use, and offering brief information about treatment options.

Intervention

Describe the preferred intervention for the contemplation stage. The goal is to help patients resolve their ambivalence in direction of change. This might include exploring reasons for stopping/not stopping, increasing confidence in the ability to change, explore fears and concerns about stopping, clarifying misconceptions, discussing options for treatment.

Preparation

Here you will apply this stage to your health behavior. Write 3-4 sentences (1 paragraph). Be sure that you are using correctly formatted in text citations (Glanz, Rimer, & Viswanath, 2015). Remember that when you cite this same text in the same paragraph, it will look different (Glanz et al., 2015).

Processes of Change

Intervention

Describe the preferred intervention for the preparation stage. The goal is to prepare for behavior change and negotiate a plan. For smoking cessation, this might include setting a quit date, removing all tobacco, identifying triggers and plans for avoiding or coping, reviewing/teaching coping skills, identifying sources of support for quitting, and/or pharmacology use.

Action

Here you will apply this stage to your health behavior. Write 3-4 sentences (1 paragraph). Be sure that you are using correctly formatted in text citations (Glanz, Rimer, & Viswanath, 2015). Remember that when you cite this same text in the same paragraph, it will look different (Glanz et al., 2015).

Intervention

Describe the preferred intervention for the maintenance stage. The Goal is to continue to support change efforts. This might include helping the patient articulate benefits and plan strategies for coping with future challenges.
