Staff Assessment and Development Plan
Design a staff development session around a topic. You will create the design and outline for an hour-long staff development session for a faculty of 20 people that includes: lead teachers, teachers, assistants, floaters, the cook, and your two administrative staff.
Identify a topic from your facility’s need, prepare a design and outline of information to be used in a staff development session aimed at strengthening the topic. Topic examples: safety, guidance, activity planning, center procedures, communication with families, technology usage, etc.
You will NOT be delivering the actual training. You are identifying your objectives for the training, preparing the design and outline of the training, identifying the information to be shared at the training including its source, and indicating how you will evaluate the success of the training (were your objectives met)?
Special considerations: 1) You pay your staff for a monthly, hour-long meeting so you will want to fit this training into that time; it is at the end of a work-day. 2) All members of the staff (classroom and not) are included in the monthly meeting so there must be relevancy in the session for all, and 3) you must identify the one observable and measurable way you are going to evaluate the effectiveness of the session.
Design a Staff Development Session
Use this document to prepare and present your plan for a staff development session.
Your Name:
I. Perceived Area for staff improvement to Be Addressed by Training:
A. Reason for the need for improvement. Explain why you perceive there is a need for this type of training for your center.
II. Title of Staff Development Session:
III. Objectives of Session (what do you expect the staff to be able to do after participating in this session) and summary of concepts to be delivered:
e.g. Staff members will be observed using “I messages” instead of direct commands to help children make positive decisions in guidance situations
The session will be a presentation on the positive impact of “I messages”, a “how-to” demonstration on delivering “I messages” in certain guidance situations, and an opportunity for staff to practice the messages in a safe and supportive environment.
(The above entry is provided as an example—in the actual creation of your document please delete these entries and replace them with your own.)
Objectives should be written in measurable terms.
IV. Environment Organization and Materials needed:
Describe how you will set up the environment. Will staff be seated around a conference table? In a circle? A child-sized table in small chairs?
For Materials Include:
1) Any media presentations such as PowerPoints you are going to create ( you will not be creating the PP—just describe what you would put in the presentation )
2) Any already prepared videos or presentations (such as a PP) you are going to use and give full bibliographic information on them (title, publisher, date, web address- if appropriate, etc.) These must be actual materials NOT something you imagine is out there.
3) Materials such as chart paper, writing implements, projectors, hand-outs, or anything you need to complete any of the activities you have planned (including prizes and refreshments if that applies)
V. Order of Events: List every activity and portion of the session, including how long you anticipate each will last. For each activity or session portion indicate exactly what the participants will be doing and what you as the leader will be doing. Also indicate the purpose of this activity or session portion.
Example 1. Ice Breaker—five-minuste warm-up to get us thinking in the direction of more positive guidance techniques. Present the following Hangman puzzles on the chart at the front of the room and have staff work to solve them. Use the solutions to discuss tonight’s topic. Staff is working on finding the solution—as a leader I am filling in letters they call out and prompting them to find the answer, keeping it light and fun.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _?
(How many times have I told you to stop running inside?)
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _, _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _!
(Why are you talking with food in your mouth, that is rude!)
(The above entry is provided as an example—in the actual creation of your document please delete these entries and replace them with your own.)
Example 2. Activity 1 (15 minutes) Use PP slide show to introduce the idea of “I messages” and to discuss where this fits in a positive guidance philosophy, .. . . .. Participants will be attending to the PP and participating in the discussion. I will be presenting the PP and leading the discussion—asking questions and inviting input with examples, etc.
(The above entry is provided as an example—in the actual creation of your group’s document please delete these entries and replace them with your own.)
Etc, etc, etc. with Activities (as many as necessary to deliver your concept and give the group practice)
VI. Evaluation and Follow-Up-How will you determine if your objectives for the session have been met? These must be observable and measurable behaviors. Are you giving a little quiz at the end of the training? Are you having participants self-report? Are you going to observe their work for the next 4 weeks and specifically watch for these behaviors? Did you tell the staff that and how you are going to document their use of the new techniques (or their failure to do so)?
Also, explain how you will follow up on this staff development. Will you be having one-on-one sessions with staff members? Will there be an opportunity to describe successes and failures at the next staff meeting and to get feedback from peers?
Submit your completed design and outline to Brightspace.
