1. Introduction

In this report I will be reporting Shell Development Oman LLC project of Diversity and Equality as per the request of the CEO. As the Human Resource manager of Shell I will discuss the ways diversity and equality can impact the workplace and I will be giving detailed analysis on how the company should approach this issue. The goals and expectations of this project is to improve aspects of diversity and equality in our workplace as well as using the differences in the personnel for benefitting the organization’s performance. We hope that when establishing equality in the workplace we can boost the productivity of the employees in Shell Development Oman LLC which help us secure a good reputation in the labor market.

2. The Business

Shell is one of the leading energy companies in the world with a huge workforce of around 93,000 employees and an operation that involves just over 70 countries. Although the company’s origins can be traced back to 19th century it is known to be established in 1907 and named Royal Dutch Shell.

In Oman Shell Oman with its presence at air and sea and its expanding network of service station contributes to the nation’s overall economic growth. Since Shell fist established its grounds in Oman in 1958 with its activities being fuel and lubricants marketing and then moving to becoming a public limited company in 1997; Shell Oman has become a leading petroleum development company in Oman.

Shell in Oman:

· 194 Service Sations around Oman

· Omanization level of about 92%

· Owns and operates Oman’s only oil blending plant

Equality and diversity

Equality and Diversity in general are very key aspects of human’s existence on this planet. As human being we are naturally very diverse in terms our backgrounds, genders, race, status, age, disability and many more aspects that differentiate us from one another.

Equality socially means a state in which people within a specific society or group must have exact same status and treatment in terms of freedom of speech, basic civil rights, health benefits, economic equality, social services and many more aspects of human relations and interactions. Social equality is the enemy of discrimination and social class boundaries.

Discrimination in definition is the act of favoring a certain group of people over others based on the group they belong to, class or even category. Though discrimination can be justified like when we send criminals to jail for doing wrong activities it mostly is not justified in other cases. Other ways people discriminate against each other are limitless; people can find mysterious way to treat other differently like discriminating based on age, disability, marital status, religion, sex, gender, genetics, nationality, color, ethnicity, family status and so many more.

Diversity is a strong tool that we humans have and it was to be used properly humans can become whole and each sub group will be able to improve with the help of others. Diversity goes a long way beyond just the cultural aspect of it and extend to other aspects of gender, race, language and educational backgrounds.

Difference between equality and diversity

Equality: it is to provide equal opportunities amongst people from different groups with no exceptional treatment for anyone. Equality eliminates discrimination.

Diversity: having a variety of people with diverse backgrounds and from different groups which helps combing power and sharing ideas from different perspectives all at once.

Diversity and Equality in the workplace

Diversity in the work place means for the company to employ a variety of diverse individuals of different backgrounds and characteristics. To put it plainly; it is to have a workforce of people with different characteristics as discussed earlier. Diversity is one of the issues that concern Human Resources of an organization as they are the ones responsible for recruiting and employing individuals.

Since very recently HR managements have started putting diversity in the workplace as goal to be achieved and that could be because of the benefits that it brings to the workplace. These benefits go from bringing together a diverse expertise to an organization to improving the reputation of the organization.

A diverse workplace allows organizations access to a wide scope of skills, ideas and resources which put businesses ahead, such benefits include:

· Increased creativity: it is clear that people who come from various backgrounds tend to perform better in terms of offering different perspectives and experiences when merged together.

· Higher Innovation rate: according to Josh Bersin’s research on diversity in the workplace; companies with a diverse workforce are 1.7 times more likely to be innovative leaders in their market.

· Better problem solving: diverse teams are able to solve problems faster that groups with people of similar minds and backgrounds. (Reynolds & Lewis, 2017)

· Better Decision Making

· Increased Profits

Equality In the workplace on the other hand basically suggests that no employee should come across or be afraid of being discriminated against based on their sex, age, etc. It is all about providing all employees with the same opportunities to improve as well as punishments so when rules tend to bend in some cases that shows a possibility of discrimination occurring.

It is the duty of the Human Resource management to prevent such discrimination from taking place within their organization as well as holding accountable those responsible for such occurrences.

When diversity and Equality are both present in a working environment there can be big positive impacts on the performances of businesses and can be noticed in the following forms:

· Improved Productivity

· Positive and harmonic working environment for employees to thrive

· Improved Sustainability

· Diverse sets of skills

The Qualities of our project can be achieved by making a law that indicates our employees get their 60 days leave per year. We will have 100% of our workers being Omanies from 90%. Take actions in terms of empowering women by increasing the percentage of working women up to 40%. Adjusting Employees working schedule according to our 8 hours per day working limit. Our Human Resources will make sure to bring together all departments of our organization under one force with the leadership of the CEO in order to achieve our goals and objectives in timely manner. Once all parties are involved we can start with our project.

Risk

The two biggest risks from this project will be the elimination of the remaining 10% expats in the country which we will definitely compensate as well as the employment of fresh graduates and job seekers with no experience and that also can be managed by our HR team with the right assessments, interviews and recruitment techniques.

Week 2: I chose the company which was Shell Oman and did the required research on the company and its policies on diversity and equality.

Week 3: I started the work by writing about diversity and equality in general. I then rsearched and wrote about diversity and equality in the work place followed by writing on Shell Oman’s diversity and equality.

Week 4: Started the actual work on the project starting with the setting my goals, aims, objectives and the procedure.

Any risks and/or issues identified?

No specific risks identified but there was the issue of timing as the Corona virus delayed the work.

I had little issues in terms of finding enough information on Shell Oman’s stance on diversity and equality. I also had some setbacks in terms of making my objectives as they were clashing with some laws.

Problems encountered

What have I learnt about myself this week?

I learnt that I have some issues in terms of time management and need to put my feet down and start working little by little.

I learnt that I can be clumsy so I decided to set down points and breakdown the work so I can work better and have more focus when working on each part.

Tasks planned for next week

Work on finding enough information on equality and diversity in the workplace.

Research about Shell Oman to see what can be done in terms diversity and equality.
