The activity to date and a justification for the activity

My activity to date has involved some longer holds, day trading, and monitoring the Health Technology industry.

I have also diversified by spreading my cash around in different industries.

One thing I should have done differently was to not sell off my index funds so early.

My main activity has been day trading specific stocks such as BABA and TPL which have been trending. They have both had great returns when purchased at the right time and sold the same day.

With the recent news of Tesla taking a major hit I decided to invest a large amount into Ford and that has paid off very well. This was a reaction to another company going into a slump.

Another stock I chose early on was Netflix as they had some new material getting dropped which created a decent increase in their stock value. I only held onto this stock for a week and sold it before it began to decline.

Lastly, I chose to invest in a SPY ETF which has a 9.48% return to date. I believe I should not have been so frugal on this investment as it has had a great return and would have been a great way to further diversify funds in a seemingly low risk manner.

Portfolio Summary 11/10/2022

Health Technology Positions Held

MDT (Medtronic Plc)

BSX (Boston Scientific Corp)

ALGN (Align Technology Inc)

SYK (Stryker Corp)

MDT is at a 2.21% loss, ALGN is at a 2.96% loss, and SYK is at a .82% loss since we began this course. The Health Technology market has not been doing well in this economy. With the weak economic growth and rising inflation many technology industries are struggling.

The only Health Technology stock trending upward since the beginning of this course has been BSX. They currently have a 2.23% increase in value per share. During the third quarter they saw an increase in sales for certain products where the other companies have not.

I believe the struggles for ALGN have been due to the rise in inflation. Their main products are discretionary health items that people will cut back on when their budget gets tight.

MDT has had issues with their new products performing to the standard expected. Their lack of quality is the culprit to blame for a stand still value in their stock.

Stryker has seen a major spike in their insider transactions. They have also suffered the same issue of rising inflation and a stronger dollar affecting them.

Current Positions Held

F(Ford Motor Co.) – Consumer Durables

BABA (Alibaba Group Holding Ltd) – Retail Trade

CMG (Chipotle Mexican Grill) – Consumer Services

Ford is a stock I chose to invest in when the news broke about Elon Musk selling off $4b of Tesla stock. I made a judgment call that the decline in Tesla value would ripple over and cause an increase in other consumer durables companies. This has paid off as a good decision because since that announcement Ford stock is up 7%. Ford has had falling sales and increased manufacturing costs causing some financial issues. I think a dip in electric vehicles gives them and other companies a window to capitalize on.

BABA has been on a buy and sell frenzy over the last month. The SEC has warned BABA about delisting them for not opening their books to U.S accounting regulations. I have been successful on day trading this stock as it seems to be a buy early morning and rises in value late morning. I then sell in the afternoon before it seems to trend downward before closing.

CMG was my worst choice of investment, and I was finally able to sell it off on Friday 11/11/22. I thought I was buying the stock at a good dip point, but the stock continued to tumble for two more weeks. Once I felt the loss was minimal, I decided to sell at a $5,000 loss compared to the $23,000 I was at previously.

How market conditions have impacted the portfolio

During the end of October and beginning of November, post third quarter, the stock market has been doing great. This has had a positive impact on my portfolio as many industries are on the rise.

The market condition for Health Technology has been evening out to where there isn’t much loss or gain. This is due to the decline in growth for technology that is currently being experienced across all industries.

With the economic issues going on in China this has caused some stocks to waver. In my portfolio BABA has been affected by this and has been a great day trade option with relatively low risk.

Even with the current economic state of the US and rising inflation we have seen a great return over the last four weeks. My portfolio has done very well and if this was my own money, I would be very happy with the outcome thus far.

What would I change in my Portfolio

One thing I would change in my portfolio is investing in index funds. This creates broad diversification with low risk.

I would also purchase more ETF’s, mutual funds, and bonds. With a company it is best to have low risk long term investments.

I have also learned that for myself the long-term investments are much less risky and can be a great way to invest in my own future.
