Primary Role of Medical Social Workers
Medical social workers are involved in helping the patient and their families in need of psychosocial help. They also help the patient with essential services such as psychotherapy, counselling and aiding the patient with any assistance they need (Judd & Sheffield, 2010).This helps the patient to recover, also they aid the patient assessing other services such as insurance covers.it is good to note that, the patient needs a lot of care, respect, dignity and a high level of confidentiality to help them boost their self-esteem which helps the patient to feel more comfortable to assess the health care services. Some of the issues involved in patient care that if not addressed can be disastrous include; complications, unnecessary treatment, unexamined instruments, wrong prescriptions among others. However, this problem can be minimized if the medical social worker carries out his duties professionally (Craig & Muskat, 2013).
To ensure effective patient care services, more is needed to be done by the medical social worker. There is need to employ a variety of skills when handling a patient. This include; good listening skills, critical thinking, problem solving skills among others. Patient s need a lot of attention and thus medical social workers should take time to listen, ask questions where appropriate and avoid raising his/her emotions (Marshall, et al., 2011). Also, they need to ensure they employ good communication skills by speaking with the patients in a friendly and respectable manner. They need to use a language which is convenient to both the patient and their family. On top of this, there is need of the medical social worker to acquire more knowledge and specialize in the area that they feel they are comfortably work. This may include; specializing in areas such as children care, aging care, addiction and mental care among others (Mah & Johnstone, 2012).This will help the social worker to perform his duties well in the area of their expertise. This will drastically reduce instances where, patients are given wrongful prescription, complications, unnecessary treatment etc.

Thank you for mentioning the medical social worker’s involvement in discussions about health insurance. Gehlert and Browne (2012), shares that no matter how affordable insurance is or will become, insurance related issues will always exist for social workers. Some may elect not to enroll in insurance, others will not be eligible to enroll and those with insurance may not understand their coverage (Gehlert & Browne, 2012). A medical social worker will need a great grasp on types of Medicare, Medicaid or state insurances and aspects of private insurance when aiding a family with linkage and coordination of care during discharge. Also, a medical social worker will need to be prepared to have hard conversations with families about the limitations of those insurance and how their savings or property they own will affect their interest or application for Medicaid or state insurance. I completed my internship with a hospice agency. As an observer, it was enlightening to see the knowledge the social worker possessed about varies insurance and how the client’s current savings account or possessions would be affected after death if they applied for Medicaid. The use of counseling will be vital in the role of medical social work during discussions about insurances to educate and guide clients and families.

Hello Sweatt,
Typical interventions include arranging specialist appointments, getting insurance authorizations, scheduling outpatient treatments such as dialysis, having patients evaluated by extended care facilities, ordering equipment, arranging home health services, and providing information on services available for private pay such as caregivers, meal services or emergency alert systems. Great Post, also Case management is a very marketable skill.
