According to the National Institute of Health, NIH, the four current priorities for nursing research are to build the foundation for clinical practice, prevent disease and disability, manage and eliminate symptoms caused by illness, and enhance end of life and palliative care. 

I agree with these priorities as all are essential in providing the safest, most effective, and evidence-based patient centered care.  Helping to build the foundation for clinical practice should be evident in any area of nursing research, as it will have implications for future practice.  Although nursing research should be centered around optimal outcomes for the patients, some research does not directly relate to patient care but can involve financing, healthcare administration, and even insurance.  However, all roads eventually lead to optimizing the patient experience. 

Nursing research requires collaboration amongst many different disciplines.  Nurses, physicians, state and local officials, community members, and many others can help contribute to research practices.  For research to have an impact on the four priorities the input of different ideas and perspectives is extremely valuable and required to achieve optimal outcomes. 

I work at an ambulatory surgery center and while our focus is not on end of life or palliative care, all four priorities are still essential in our practice.  It is always important to be knowledgeable in these aspects of nursing care and be up to date on the latest research, especially when it involves your particular specialty.  One of our main focuses here is on infection prevention and we pay close attention to the research done in that area.

The four priorities for nursing research are to build the foundation for clinical practice, prevent disease and disability, manage symptoms caused by illness, and to enhance end of life and palliative care. These priorities can be used in nursing research through research lenses.  Research lenses are perspectives to consider in which nursing researchers can view their research through the eyes of a patient. The research lenses take into consideration health and illness through the eyes of the patient.  Social determinants of health, population health, community health, prevention and health promotion, and systems and models of care encompass this theory and are the arms of the research. I believe that these areas of focus are the top priorities for nursing research, as they all intertwine with the patient and their health and health promotion (National Institute of Nursing Research,2022). 

I agree with the NINR research priorities.  I believe that it helps categorize how to engage in research and what to look for. Considering the patients perspective when initiating a research topic is important to try to formulate a hypothesis around question.  For example, when considering social determinants of health one can anticipate that low-income areas are going to have more health disparities than those is areas of middle- or high-income families. Then by starting with that assumption the researcher can either prove or disprove that to be true through their research. 

At times, it is difficult to find information on a research topic unless you have some of the key factors about the group of people you are trying to study, to form a hypothesis.  We also need to know what type of models of health care are available and can try to assess the knowledge of the patient population to determine if they know what type of health care is available to them, and how to promote their own health promotion and prevention.  This area of research is useful when trying to develop a plan of care for your patient population.

Community health ties into all these components of research, as one needs to know the patient demographic they are working with and what is surrounding them.  Studying the health of a community is often beneficial to understand the dynamics and demographics of a particular community.  Common community health problems   help us understand the needs of the community and how to formulate our interventions. 

All of the lenses and priorities of research as explained through the NINR website are helpful and important.  I agree with their stance on nursing research. The priorities mentioned can be used in every patient care area, and any area of research.
