Implementing game-based learning for staff development requires training programs to be in place (Froland et al., 2022). The training program should include managers, educators, and staff. In addition, users need to understand how to use the game-based learning platform. Although most games-based learning platforms are user-friendly, there should still be instructions on how to log in and navigate, requirements for using the podium with a smartphone or personal computer or devices, and how to play the game. In addition, training should include what to do if the user experiences an issue or if the system is not operating appropriately.
Training for managers and educators would be different than staff training. Several game-based learning platforms require facilitators to customize the platform specific to the organization or education. Managers or educators should receive training in creating practical test questions for staff development. In addition, training in digital literacy should be considered (Froland et al., 2022). Furthermore, managers and educators will need to understand how to use and troubleshoot issues experienced by staff to support staff on how to use the game-based platform (Froland et al., 2022). Before adopting a platform for game-based learning, managers should inquire if the company provides training and the available resources.
Managers and educators must continuously evaluate the game-based learning training program and update it accordingly. Ongoing training may be needed for updates depending on the platform utilized. However, further education should be provided if a staff member tests poorly on the game-based platform. Creating a facilitator’s guide, gameplay rules, policies, and procedures are necessary to prevent staff cheating. Furthermore, game-based learning platforms utilizing collaboration games allow staff to communicate during the game. Managers must train staff on the rules and policies on sharing via platform portal or sidebar to prevent bullying or misbehavior.
Game-based learning platforms allow managers to evaluate staff results and address areas of concern promptly. According to Crowley-Barnett et al. (2020), continuous game-based learning staff outcomes are crucial to ensuring adequate education. However, first, managers should conduct surveillance to ensure staff practices what has been learned (Crowley-Barnett et al., 2020). For example, further investigation may be required if a staff member is not practicing what they learned to determine if it was due to the content of the game-based learning platform.

In order to implement a training program for the new electronic medical record documentation of a trauma resuscitation it will have to be four step process. Step one will be to announce that the new training is coming. The announcement will need to be released in enough advance to allow leadership and nursing staff members to be able to schedule the time for their education. Step two will involve the actual in person training of the documentation in a computer lab. This phase should not be rushed. It will provide the end users enough time to practice in the lab and allowed to familiarize themselves with what is required and where to locate the required documentation. Step three will involve four hours of mock trauma resuscitations, running through situations and experiencing how to document quickly and effectively. Step four will detail the follow process of auditing the documentation of real trauma resuscitations and providing feedback to end users in a timely manner. During this step, it is important to listen to the feedback that the end users. Utilize the feedback that is being received by the end users for future training of end users.
In order to complete the training program, I will need a few staff members who are comfortable enough in documenting in the electronic medical record that will be able to assist in the teaching of documentation. A computer lab with enough computers available for end users to access and be able to utilize the new documentation system. Example charts of trauma patients will be utilized so that the end users can practice before they move into a quicker practice phase. It will be vital that the electronic medical record has a test environment that the end users can utilize and practice with. Most importantly, we will require the support of leadership to work on scheduling the employees in order participate in the training.
The training process will need to be ongoing. As newer staff members gradually move into the care of trauma patients, training will have to be available to support the newer trauma nurses in their growth. The process of documentation must be monitored for effectiveness of the training and patient outcomes.
