This course in Community Health has educated me a lot about the substantial responsibilities and functions that a nurse plays as a propagator of the well-being of communities. I truly appreciated having participated in meaningful and beneficial discussions with my colleagues in learning more about the fundamental nature of role of the public health nurse. Truly, various responsibilities of the public health nurse were studied in relation to the primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention with target community populations. In the course, different community nursing roles were analyzed and studied that meet the emerging health needs of people, families, communities, and populations. Take for example the things we discovered about ageism and the challenges that the elderly population face in the community.

In the initial discussions, we have learned from constructive discussions about how a person’s difference in age, culture, race, gender and living situation may impact our comfort as a nurse in communicating with them. interesting discussions were also shared about how various cultures and how we treated our respective elderly members. Discussions were also shared on the concept of life review, its goals, and benefits, and how it differs and related with ordinary remembering. Problems and challenges concerning old were deemed as developing significant matter of concern worldwide. As stated, continuously increasing populace of the elderly is one of the most challenging concerns the in the fields of health and welfare (Sharif et al., 2018). Researchers have paid more attention to the subject of how to spend one’s old age. There is much needed emphasis on the elderly people’s quality of life. As a result, it was considered necessary that the right healthcare programs be established and applied for this age group (Sharif et al., 2018). One of the approaches to enhancing the quality of life and well-being of the elderly is group life review sessions. We were also re-acquainted with the different assessment tools used when a conducting a therapeutic assessment interview.

In this course, we also emphasized on learning and evaluating approaches that can be used by the community health nurses to enhance or improve the health status of populations and eliminate health disparities of vulnerable populations. Emphasis was made particularly on the topic concerning the elderly populations. Likewise, we focused on how to plan, analyze, implement, and evaluate public health surveillance and outbreak investigation. The subject I focused on was the re-emergence and epidemiology of the Monkeypox disease. This endemic continues to spread worldwide and has triggered the emergence of the role of the public health nurse in serving and ensuring positive health outcomes among the community population. As this develops, Access to pertinent up-to-date information is as crucial as ever. The public population deserves to understand more about Monkepox, its methods of spreading, how to prevent, treat, and control its spread to the community. As the virus continues to spread among community populations, there lies the urge to continuously implement a rigorous health information campaign to address specifically affected populations and protect them as best we can.

Lastly, we also studied about foreseeable trends in lifestyles that have affected the health of communities and the future challenges for nursing. The focal point for this learning objective was made particularly on the LGBTQ population. We learned from the discussions about certain psychological, environmental, sociocultural, behavioral, and health system factors might be contributing to the failure of LGBT to use health care services and what community nursing interventions might promote more effective use of services. Another important thing we learned was on building and formulating strategies to deliver nursing care in the preparedness, response, and recovery phases of disaster management in cases of natural calamities and emergencies. In this course we were able to identify our own level of preparedness should disaster strike in your area.

Throughout the past eight weeks, we have discussed the emerging health needs in our community, which has been enlightening. Through learning about community health, which consists of health promotion, disease prevention, and restorative care (Clark, 2015), I have gained a basic understanding of community-based healthcare. Each module had its challenges, including extensive research for final project.

For example, module 1 discussed ageism, stereotyping older adults as a burden to society. Through this module, I explored and reflected on experiences in my current practice. Therefore, as a healthcare provider, I must advocate more vigorously for my patients and ensure that barriers become obsolete. Module 2 entailed a life review of an older adult. Although, in my practice, This module became therapeutic for the patient and me. As a result of the module, I learned that life reviews could identify goals and implement measures to achieve positive outcomes, such as becoming more independent. In module 3, I learned the importance of preparedness. As a community nurse, informing, responding, and evaluating preparedness is essential to survival. I have a garage emergency kit, hoping never to need it.

The introduction and importance of epidemiology in module 4 outlined how community nurses need to trace the cause of the distribution of disease. Through finding, reporting, collecting, and analyzing data, community nurses reduce causality risk and rate of occurrence, preventing an outbreak in the community. Finally, modules 5 and 6 provided an opportunity to review schoolchildren and members of the LGBT community regarding specific health problems and public humiliation. Students are subject to multiple temptations, from sexual encounters to illicit drug use daily. Without proper education on consequences or adverse outcomes can lead to various STDs or incurable diseases such as Herpes. In addition, healthcare providers must participate in cultural training regarding healthcare delivery to the LGBT community.

As for my community assessment project, I learned how important a community advocate, such as a community health nurse, can influence decisions regarding the change. However, the stakeholders in the community look for a leader who can inspire them through motivational messages, which excites them and creates involvement. The stakeholders understand what the community needs. Their goal is to have the needs heard and not perceived.

In collaboration with community health care, community health nurses can reach all communities, which include the poor and underinsured. Community health nurses translate health and social science's knowledge to individuals and population groups and articulate individuals' and families' health and illness experiences through targeted interventions, programs, and advocacy (DeMarco PhD APRN BC ACRN, Rosanna & Healey-Walsh, 2019).
