Assignment 4: Young People at Work

Assignment Brief

You are working for Twenty Twenty manufacturing. You have been told that the managing director is keen to start promoting the company and his first move has been to contact the local secondary school to tell them you will allow children to come along to spend some time at Twenty Twenty on their work experience scheme. Your child wants to become a design engineer in this field. The students have no known health problems and are physically fit. The company is a small manufacturing company producing parts for mobile telephones. The company has an adequate health and safety policy. All support staff have workstations which are DSE (display screen equipment) compliant. Design engineers undertake development and trials of new parts of components which involves the use of work with uncovered live electrical parts. Some live electrical work takes place in the design room. The nature of work undertaken in the assembly shop and design room makes it unsuitable for someone of young years to enter or work there. Although electrical installation is not part of the normal work you do have two handymen who have had training to install electrical plugs and points to enable flexibility of testing stations. The plating room contains an extremely hazardous chemical, hydrogen cyanide which is used to plate certain components. This is off limits except to authorised personnel. The guidance for the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999/ Workplace Safety and Health Act and other local regulations, contain guidelines on what young people can be reasonably be expected to undertake, and specifically cover what they cannot do. Your task is to:

 Produce a risk assessment of a child on work experience in the described workplace.

 Produce a bullet point list of what should be contained in an induction process for a child.

 Identify who should be involved in compiling the risk assessment.  Identify who should be given a copies of the risk assessment.
