SPT 510 Final Project Milestone One Guidelines and Rubric Overview: Each sport organization, regardless of the level, faces challenges. Some challenges are unique to that organization, while others, such as financing, are universal. Sport organizations of all levels also operate within the construct of societal values and norms. Therefore, society influences the behavior of those individuals making up the sport organization. Society sets precedents on acceptable behavior, although sport organizations occupy a unique position, as they also influence and can be a harbinger of societal change. With this duality of roles, a sport organization has the potential to impact entire communities and not just the team, or the athletic organization to which it belongs. Consequently, when a sport organization responds in a moment of crisis caused by actions of individuals associated with the program, the impact can reverberate across entire communities, and society as a whole. Your paper will organize and convey the impact a specific sport organization had on a community prior to a specific incident, and then the impact it has following the outcome of the incident. Choose from the list provided in the Final Project Document, or select a different choice with your instructor’s approval. Perceptions of the organization’s value, place in the community, place in all of society, and whether or not the sport organization contributes to the established culture should be explored and presented. Prompt: Submit a draft of the Overview and Societal Perception portions of your final project. Address all critical elements as listed below. Select and summarize an event or incident and describe the challenges the sport organization faces. Your analysis should be written from the perspective of the society with which the sport organization is affiliated. This means that you are answering both questions in the Societal Perception section as listed below as if you were a member of the society surrounding the sport organization. Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:

I. Overview A.

Select a sport organization and summarize the event or incident and its effects.

B. Describe the specific challenges this event or incident presented to the organization.

II. Societal Perception In this section, you will analyze how the organization you selected is viewed by the surrounding society in which the event or incident took place. Specifically, you need to:

A.

Explain how the surrounding society values the sport organization and views its purpose. You might consider discussing the organization’s ongoing economic and sociocultural influence.

B. Determine how the event or incident reinforced stereotypes or cultural norms the organization has perpetuated.

Guidelines for Submission: Your draft of the Overview and Societal Perception must be 3 to 4 pages in length and must be written in APA format. Use double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, and one-inch margins. Please note that the grading rubric for the draft submission of the Overview and Societal Perception sections of your final project is not identical to that of the Final Project rubric. The Final Project Rubric will include an additional “Exemplary” category that provides guidance as to how you can go above and beyond “Proficient” in your final submission.
