Use this worksheet to write a press release to explain the sport organization’s response to the event or incident to external stakeholders.

1. Overview – Provide a brief overview stating the facts that you would release to the public, providing only necessary and appropriate information. For example, academic records of students and health records of athletes are protected by law. The organization should provide only publicly available facts. Facts unknown to the public and part of an open investigation are normally kept private.

2. Response Addressed – Determine a self-defense resolution strategy that is appropriate for the incident. Describe the response to the event or incident and how it was addressed by management.

a. Denial – attempt to change the meaning of the act being questioned

b. Bolstering – attempt to link the individual or the incident to something positive

c. Differentiation – attempt to disconnect the incident from a larger context

d. Transcendence – attempt to connect the incident to a larger context

(Billings, Butterworth, & Turman, 2012).

3. Future Events or Incidents – Explain how future events or incidents can and will be addressed based on the organization’s response to this situation. If appropriate, discuss the plan to gather more information to deal with the current incident. Clearly state policies or procedures that will be implemented by the sport organization to eliminate or minimize future incidents.
