Final Project
SPT 401 Final Project Guidelines and Rubric
Overview You will create a one-year facility management plan in an area of interest as your final project. You may select any type of sport-related facility as your focus for a general SWOT analysis, consumer/user analysis, and a thorough plan for management and operation. This plan will include sections establishing standards for safety and security, facility layout improvement, operational improvements, consumer engagement opportunities, maintenance, community involvement, and event scheduling. As part of your plan, you will create a visual representation of the maintenance, event, and improvement-related tasks for one busy month out of the year. You will then select one week within that month to go into further detail regarding the various security and safety related tasks, preparatory tasks, and maintenance task that are necessary for the facility in a facility use calendar.
The project is divided into three milestones, which will be submitted at various points throughout the course to scaffold learning and ensure quality final submissions. These milestones will be submitted in Modules One, Two, and Four. The final product will be submitted in Module Seven.
In this assignment, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following course outcomes:
Formulate recommendations for effective management and appropriate improvement of facility design and operations
Analyze the physical aspects and operations of facilities for potential legal and regulatory implications and infractions
Recommend a leveled security and safety plan for a specific sport facility that balances safety and general fiscal responsibility for various types of events
Analyze current technological trends for informing sport facility management and operation improvements
Integrate strategies suitable for communicating with facility stakeholders and engaging potential facility guests and partners into plans for effective management of sports facilities
Prompt Select a facility that interests you and/or aligns to your future career goals and develop a facility management plan. As you work through the following directives, remember that different types of facilities will require different levels of strategy. A community pool will not require the same level of security as a large, professional football stadium, while a large stadium will not rely as heavily on community involvement and support as a community facility. Your ultimate goals as a facility manager are to keep your community and clientele healthy and happy, and to keep your facility thriving and even growing. Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
I. Facility Analysis: This section will serve as a general analysis of the facility and its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats, and users.
A. Introduce the facility and its uses and users, ownership status, size, and importance to the community. B. Using the provided SWOT Matrix Template document, identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats facing the facility and its
operations. C. Then, expand upon the findings in the matrix to address the following:
1. Analyze the physical layout of the facility for potential risks and regulatory issues. 2. Analyze the current maintenance needs and operations of the facility for potential legal issues or threats. 3. Analyze the current use of technology in the facility for potential areas of improvement based on current technology trends. 4. Analyze current technological trends in facility management to identify potential improvements to your selected facility. You will make a
technological recommendation later in this report. For example, some large facilities are incorporating viewing screens in the stands, while some small facilities are implementing wireless options for users to connect to during events.
II. Facility Use Calendar: Create a calendar that clearly communicates the events, event-related tasks, maintenance and operational tasks, security-tasks, and important appointments you must schedule for one week of your choice. For this piece, you will use the provided Final Project Calendar Guide template. This will be submitted as the appendix of your report, and you may refer to it throughout your report.
III. Maintenance and Operations Planning: In this section you will focus on the general maintenance and operational aspect of facility management necessary to keep the facility running. Specifically, refer to the following critical elements:
A. Recommend a high-level plan for maintaining the facility. In other words, discuss how you plan on monitoring the various maintenance tasks. B. Formulate a list of maintenance tasks that should be completed monthly to keep the facility in top operational form.
IV. Safety and Security Plan: In this section, you will recommend a leveled security and safety plan for your facility. Your plan will vary depending on the type and size of your facility and the type of events it can host. Specifically, address the following:
A. Recommend a general day-to-day security and safety plan that is appropriate for your facility, and explain your reasoning. B. Recommend a safety and security plan for a specific event listed in your facility use calendar that addresses the security needs of the event. C. Explain how you would balance the security needs of the event with the cost of security personnel for a fiscally responsible plan. D. Recommend an emergency action plan for the selected event that your facility can use in the event of an emergency.
V. Networking and Communications: In this section, recommend strategies for communication with internal and external stakeholders. As a facility manager, you will have to connect with a broad range of stakeholders to ensure that your facility is in line with regulations, has the support of the community, and has the opportunity to hold events that interest the users of your facility.
A. Establish a strategy for managing and monitoring communications necessary for continued maintenance and operations of the facility. In other words, how will you communicate with and monitor your staff to ensure that the necessary maintenance tasks are being done?
B. Describe the type and importance of communications and networking opportunities you should involve yourself in as facility manager. Hint: How will you bring events to your facility, and how will you communicate events to potential audiences?
C. Discuss the facility’s involvement with the community. Why is community consideration important for your particular facility? D. What external individuals, organizations, and governmental departments do you need to maintain contact with to successfully operate your
facility and manage events? VI. Recommendations and Technology: Based on your SWOT analysis and the considerations you have made throughout your report, you will outline two
opportunities, described below, for facility improvement, and discuss your responsibilities for risk management as a facilities manager. Each recommendation should be supported.
A. Recommend a physical design improvement, either internal or external, that will provide a better layout for the use of the facility. Be sure to explain how the recommendation will improve functionality.
B. Recommend a potential technological opportunity for the facility that may allow for increased efficiency or effectiveness of facility management.
Milestone One: Facility Selection Short Paper
Milestones
In Module One, you will submit a short paper in which you will compare and contrast two vastly different types of facilities and, at the end of the assignment, choose which facility you will select for your final project. This milestone is intended to help you achieve a more clear focus on the type of facility that you are interested in studying for your final project. This milestone will be graded with the Milestone One Rubric.
Milestone Two: SWOT Analysis In Module Two, you will submit a SWOT analysis in which you will evaluate the specific facility you have chosen for your final project. You will imagine you have just been hired as the new facility manager at the facility you have chosen. You will conduct a SWOT analysis of the facility and create three SMART goals for improvement to facility layout, operations, and technology. This exercise will help you prepare for drafting the introductory section of your final project. This milestone will be graded with the Milestone Two Rubric.
Milestone Three: Safety and Emergency Action Plan In Module Four, you will submit an emergency action plan (EAP) for an upcoming event at the facility you have chosen for your final project. You must consider both who and what must be in place (i.e., staged) before the event occurs, and what actions will be taken should an emergency situation arise during the event, all while balancing these needs with fiscal responsibility for your facility. This milestone will address two of the three levels of the safety and security plan required in the final project. For your final project, in addition to the levels addressed in this milestone, you will also need to address the first level of the general day-to-day security and safety plan that is appropriate for your facility. This milestone will be graded with the Milestone Three Rubric.
Final Submission: Facility Management Plan In Module Seven, you will submit your final project. It should be a complete, polished artifact containing all of the critical elements of the final product. It should reflect the incorporation of feedback gained throughout the course. This submission will be graded with the Final Project Rubric.
